Explore the possibilities of flip dots, small electromagnetic actuators made out of simple copper coils and magnetic hematite beads.Join us for a night of handcrafted motion as we build our own motors from scratch! Together we will explore the possibilities of flip dots, small electromagnetic actuators made out of simple copper coils and magnetic hematite beads. Inspired by the Stitching Worlds project, we will also discuss how our conceptions of electronics and the worlds that made them shift when we reimagine their lineage from craft work. By the end of the workshop, participants will have stitched or crocheted your own flip dot and learned about options for driving its motion. This is a beginner workshop! Participants do not need any prior knowledge to join, though basic knowledge of sewing will be useful.

RSVP https://www.eventbrite.com/e/scrapyard-challenge-classic-arcade-controller-redesign-workshop-tickets-1038885212637
Join an interactive, arcade controller design workshop where participants will build wacky controllers for classic arcade games!Have you ever wanted to play a game but could never master the given controller?
The Scrapyard Challenge: Classic Arcade Controller Redesign Workshop is an interactive, arcade controller design workshop that will allow you to build and design novel controllers for classic arcade games such as Street Fighter, Ms.PacMan, Contra, Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot, Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Space Invaders, and more.
Participants are split into groups and can choose a classic video game and design a novel controller (the crazier the better!) to control all aspects of the game such as action buttons including jump, kick, punch, shoot, magic and directions such as up, down right, left. The goal is to make each game as interactive as possible (the crazier the better!) with full-body control systems built from scrap materials and junk.
The workshop uses custom built interface boards with USB encoders and RaspberryPi computers running RetroPie for game emulation.
No knowledge necessary to participate - open to anyone with a curious mind who wants to hack electronics!
NOTE: For this workshop participants are encouraged to bring "junk" to the workshop to hack on. This can include: Misc gadgets - basically any old kids toys that have moving parts are good - like a kids mini garage set or a plastic radio or plastic doll house, etc.. on the gadget side - things like electric can openers, fans, old record players, RC cars, etc…

Resistor hosts a meetup for the diyaudio.nyc group, and invites anyone to come learn about making your own home audio gear.diyaudio.nyc has regular meetups to share recent DIY projects (speakers, amps, preamps, tubes and solid state - anything home-audio related), as well as talks and demos on related topics and skills (how to solder, how digital crossovers work, fabrication techniques, digital room correction, etc). Building your own gear doesn't have to be a solitary hobby anymore...This meetup we'll talk about creating digital crossovers, show off a basic bluetooth speaker, and go over a list of tools anyone getting started will want to pick up - with some more projects to be added.
We like to have a talk about some sort of audio concept, a little show-and-tell, and some demos and background info for anyone just getting started in the hobby.
Have a project to share? Email diyaudio@gowanusaudio.com with the details.
Who should come?
Open to anyone interested in DIY home audio who wants to learn and make some new friends - all experience levels welcome. If you've ever wanted to build any audio gear, we're here for you. (We generally don't focus on production, live sound, musical instruments, or making music, although there certainly is some overlap.)
Note from the organizer, Pete:
I started diyaudio.nyc a couple years ago because I wanted to meet some like-minded folks near me - I knew they were out there. And they are! Thank you for being a part! Let's grow this group! These days, for me, it's all audio all the time - I work as a Buyer for The Music Room buying high end audio equipment, and also offer complete classes to build your own equipment as Gowanus Audio.

Start creating beautiful interactive, and immersive generative media by learning the underlying logic and workflows of the program.TouchDesigner is a real time generative graphics application that can be used for anything from generating graphics using dynamic noise data in real-time to audio-responsive 3D geometry. We’ll go through multiple examples of how to start creating beautiful generative content in TouchDesigner. Interactive, immersive, generative media is the reason you’re investing in learning TouchDesigner, and this class helps you get started creating it right away!
In the class we will discuss the fundamentals of the TouchDesigner. If you have never used a node-based programming environment before, this class is for you. I walk you through the basics of TouchDesigner logic and workflows, explaining exactly what nodes and wires are and how they work. This includes a walk through of the basic settings and preferences you can leverage in TouchDesigner that set you up for success and make your life easier.
We will learn about all six of the operator families used by TouchDesigner, and how they integrate with the TouchDesigner workflow. I’ll walk you through an example project for each of them.
Instructor :Bio
Woody Poulard (aka GRNCH) is a Brooklyn-based artist/musician whose work focuses on generative audio-reactive visual installations and performances. He uses creative coding applications like TouchDesigner to generate real-time visuals, Blender for 3D design, and Ableton for music production. Trained in both audio and mechanical engineering, Woody also makes physical sculptures using digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. GRNCH’s visuals use elements of abstract, futuristic, and hypnotic scenery, often paired with his signature sound: dark, cinematic, suspenseful techno and broken beat.

Are you curious about creating intricate volumetric effects and mesmerizing procedural visuals in TouchDesigner? Are you curious about creating intricate volumetric effects and mesmerizing procedural visuals in TouchDesigner but find shader programming daunting? This hands-on workshop introduces you to the powerful RayTK library, allowing you to explore RayMarching techniques without the need for GLSL. Designed for creative coders, visual artists, and interactive designers, this workshop will empower you to build complex visuals using a node-based approach in TouchDesigner.
You'll start with the fundamentals of RayMarching, discovering how math-based Signed Distance Functions (SDFs) redefine 3D rendering by eliminating traditional geometry. We’ll dive into RayTK, a versatile library of TouchDesigner components, and explore its unique ability to generate infinitely repeating patterns, fractals, reflections, and more—without writing a single line of code.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a solid foundation in RayMarching, know how to design with RayTK nodes, and be able to incorporate animations, MIDI, and audio for interactive scenes. Whether you're creating dynamic patterns or multi-layered fractal landscapes, this workshop will leave you confident in pushing the boundaries of TouchDesigner’s node-based editor, opening new dimensions for your creative projects.
Note: Prior TouchDesigner experience, and TouchDesigner loaded on your own laptop are required for this class.
