DIY Soft Sensors: Capacitive touch sensing for textile arts

Learn how to turn your own fabric into a touch sensor you can use to control electronic components of costumes and textile art!Have you ever wanted to include controllable electronic components in your costumes, knitting or other textile projects? Have you ever wanted to add a textile element to your microcontroller project? Add capacitive touch sensing to your toolbox! In this class you'll learn:
how make your own conductive polymer as a dye bathhow to turn your electro-reactive textile into a sensor that can detect your touchhow to connect that textile sensor to a microcontrollerhow to use that sensor to produce different effects like turning electronic components on and off, creating effects over time, and even sense proximity beyond direct touch.No electronics, programming, or textiles experience is required for this class at all! We'll walk you through everything you need to know to create your textile sensor, wire it up, and program an Arduino-compatible microcontroller to create lighting effects on addressable LEDs.
All materials are included in the class, but you will need to bring your own laptop, and can optionally bring your absorbant textile swatch to dye (8" x 8" for fabrics, a small amount of yarn, a piece of natural sponge, etc.). Natural fibers typically take the process the best.
This class will be taught by Resistor members Kari Love and Katie Mills. Using techniques from the PolySense project.
There are 2 spots reserved for students who cannot access the class at the full price, so please make use of one of these need-based tickets if that is your situation.

Cameron is an active member of the livecodeNYC artist collective and is involved in community building, education, curation, and creating sustainable alternative power structures.Viola He (sandpills) is a Shanghai-born, Brooklyn-based artist, educator, and cultural organizer. Their creative practices engage with DIY electronics, programming, movements, and time-based media. Using algorithmic approaches to enhance, alternate, and obfuscate sounds and images, they work to explore pathways towards alternative structures, systems and interfaces. Viola often dreams about clowning, computational humor, and infiltrating digital spaces with physical bodies as tools for intervention.Dan Gorelick is a musician, creative technologist, and organizer who is based in the Bay Area and has a presence in Brooklyn and Berlin. He creates live audiovisual performances, blending his classical cello experience with the practice of live-coding: creating music with code. He is a co-founder of the Bay Area live audio-visual collective AV Club as well as Club Code, a non-location-specific collection of artists focusing on live-coding performance. He is also an organizer and member of the LivecodeNYC and TopLap Berlin collectives. His workshops explore live-coding as well as the creative possibilities when using technology to create music.

This Touchdesigner workshop is to teach everyone the tricks of pointcloud manipulation in TOPs! What certain nodes does to a pointcloud texture, and how those can be put into a feedback loop to create an interesting particle system.
It is recommended for atendees to have some knowledge of touchdesigner already.

What you need:
A mouse.A laptop with a dedicated GPU*.Touchdesigner downloaded and up to date.Understanding of how to put down nodes, connect nodes, chain nodes, replace nodesKnowing very basics of TOPs and SOPs.Experimented with geometry instancing and knowing your laptop won't lag

Harness the power of an Epilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need.Harness the power of an Epilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.
In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted - but we'll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!
An SVG vector file of a simple shape you'd like to cut for your first cut.A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you'd like to cut. If you can't bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site.Please be on time for the start of class! If you're late you will miss your slot.

Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Winston has been hosting mics around the city for 3 years, performing poetry and curating spaces for artists at any level to share and hone their art forms. He is proud of the friends who have been brought up, but is extra encouraging to brand new performers, trying to find an audience or share for the first time.

Because life calls for a bejeweled light-up tiaraIn 2016, I realized that the best way to read in bed is by the light of a trusty headlamp. SO, I am hosting a Saturday afternoon maker session to guide the creation of your very own headdress, either to use as a directional lamp or as a blingy tiara. It's do-it-how-you-like-it-for-yourself. DIHYLIFY.
(I will be creating a statue-of-liberty inspired corona.)
All necessary materials will be provided. Check out the latest arrival of material to Resistor below. So many excellent stones, shells, and chains. It is an abundant treasure chest and ONLY a fraction of what we have avaible. My own collection of vintage jewelry supplies is not pictured:
This is going to be a special occasion and though the material will surely influence your piece, I encourage you to have an idea of the shape of your crown when you enter the space. Google "Elizabeth Taylor Crown" for inspo.
