Klooien met (door)Starten van je project.

6:00 PM - 10:15 PM

🇳🇱 · Maakplek

Every trash day you stroll past discarded robots! Learn their stories, rescue their organs and use them to power the machines of tomorrow.Your neighborhood is awash in discarded robots! Every time trash day rolls around, you've no doubt strolled past a dozen printers, televisions, toasters, or other sophisticated electronic devices that have been dumped on the sidewalk and left for dead. Each one of them has a story to tell, and parts to offer. Wouldn't it be nice to learn those stories, and rescue their organs to power the machines of tomorrow?

During this class we'll be taking apart several inkjet printers we've rescued from the cold, bitter streets of Brooklyn to find out what makes them tick and to save the parts that we can use to make other things tick. Along the way we'll learn a bit about manufacturing, design, and why things are built the way they are. When we're done, we'll hopefully have a bountiful harvest of buttons, motors, gears, sensors, screens and other useful bits that you can use in your own projects!

This class with be taught by Adam Mayer. Adam is a longtime NYCR member who has been disassembling and resurrecting old equipment for a decade and a half. He has a stack of inkjet printers in his home that is as tall as he is.

You've acquired a pile of salvaged printer parts, now let's use those motors, buttons, sensors and switches to make a simple trash robot!Your victory is complete! You've wrested scores of motors, buttons, sensors and switches from the innards of scavenged e-waste. But how do we actually use all these gears, belts, pumps, speakers, and other mechanical and electrical doodads?
During this class we'll demonstrate how to make use of all the random components we've acquired. We'll learn how to identify and wire up different types of motors, sensors, and switches, how to reuse gears and timing belts, and how to make things that move and beep and glow! At the end of the class we'll collaborate to make a simple trash robot that, if not exactly useful, should be at least endearing.

Learn two main ways of performing projection mapping in TouchDesigner: 2D masking with KantanMapper and 3D mapping with CamSchnappProjection mapping is a technique that is used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into display surfaces for video projection. The objects may be complex industrial landscapes, such as buildings, small indoor objects, or theatrical stages. Using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. In this course, we will take you through the whole projection mapping pipeline, using TouchDesigner from content creation all the way through projector setup and calibration. This course teaches you the two main ways of performing projection mapping in TouchDesigner: 2D masking with KantanMapper and 3D mapping with CamSchnappr.

Woody Poulard (aka GRNCH) is a Brooklyn-based artist/musician whose work focuses on generative audio-reactive visual installations and performances. He uses creative coding applications like TouchDesigner to generate real-time visuals, Blender for 3D design, and Ableton for music production. Trained in both audio and mechanical engineering, Woody also makes physical sculptures using digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. GRNCH’s visuals use elements of abstract, futuristic, and hypnotic scenery, often paired with his signature sound: dark, cinematic, suspenseful techno and broken beat.

Hear one person's story of how a passion for making things with friends grew into a vibrant community of makers and personal fulfillment.Ian Cole is one of the founders of The Maker Effect Foundation (TMEF) in Orlando, Florida. TMEF's mission is to "activate and amplify the efforts of makers as they learn, build, and work together" in Central Florida. TMEF also manages MakerFX Makerspace, a 6500 sq.ft. community-driven makerspace in South Orlando, the Robot Ruckus combat robot program, and more.
After years of chasing educational, personal, and professional goals, Ian felt unfulfilled and looked for a way to make a difference in his community. SMT For You And Me: Surface Mount Soldering

Try your hand at traditional SMT hand-soldering, move on to drag soldering, and finally learn how to apply solder paste and do reflow.Surface mount components! They're hip, they're tiny, and you've probably swallowed a couple accidentally by now. If you're still using those clunky, chunky through-hole components that you found in your grandparents' butter cookie tin, well, it's time to get with the times and learn how to solder the teeny-weeny components of the future!
During this class we'll go over not one, not two, but three different soldering techniques for surface mount components. We'll try our hand at traditional hand-soldering, move on to the fast-paced world of drag soldering, and finally learn how to apply solder paste and do SMT reflow in an upcycled toaster oven we found on the curb-- just like the pros!
No prior soldering experience is required for this class.
Your Instructor: Adam Mayer is a longtime NYCR member who burnt his finger on a soldering iron when he was ten and has never forgiven it. He has done questionable things with PCBs and hot plates.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/. Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance.
