You've acquired a pile of salvaged printer parts, now let's use those motors, buttons, sensors and switches to make a simple trash robot!Your victory is complete! You've wrested scores of motors, buttons, sensors and switches from the innards of scavenged e-waste. But how do we actually use all these gears, belts, pumps, speakers, and other mechanical and electrical doodads?
During this class we'll demonstrate how to make use of all the random components we've acquired. We'll learn how to identify and wire up different types of motors, sensors, and switches, how to reuse gears and timing belts, and how to make things that move and beep and glow!
This class with be taught by Adam Mayer. Adam is a longtime NYCR member who has been disassembling and resurrecting old equipment for a decade and a half. He has a stack of inkjet printers in his home that is as tall as he is.
This is a follow up to his popular Grab the Guts: Salvaging Electronic Parts from Street Trash class, but works as a stand-alone.
N95 masks are required.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

Any items of clothing that are left over will be donated or fabric-recycled.
In true NYCR hacker fashion, we will also be happy to talk about ways to alter and improve store-bought clothes. We'll have two sewing machines out if you want to work on an alteration right here.
Come join us and gift yourself some free fashion!

An introduction to the various ways one can produce live animation utilizing MoCap, many which can be done using a laptop or phone. This class is an introduction to the various ways one can produce live animation. We will focus on techniques that utilize motion capture (aka MoCap), taking movement from the real world and applying that movement onto digital forms. We will go over the basics of programs including Adobe Character Animator, Blender, Unity, and others to help you get started. Some of the techniques can be done using your very own laptop or phone. Other mentioned methods (such as depth cameras or inertia suits) might involve additional resources for those interested in taking it a step further. We will go over the pros/cons of these methods and discuss price-points and ease-of-use to help you determine which may be best for you. This class aims to be beginner-friendly so no prior knowledge is necessary, but some general understanding of coding or game engines may be beneficial.
The first two hours will be lecture and demonstration, with the final hour of the class being an optional workshop component. The workshop will primarily introduce students to using Adobe Character Animator, though students unable to use Adobe may be given additional options to best suit their tech needs. Students interested in participating in the workshop component should bring their laptop (ideally with Adobe Character Animator already installed) and an iOS tablet (optional).
The instructor:
Marcel Oliver-Rose Truxillo [a/as/am] is an adjunct professor at Tisch’s ITP/IMA program. A focuses on virtual reality (VR) and motion capture, exploring the unique ways expression and communication emerge in performance with up-in-coming technology.

Try your hand at traditional SMT hand-soldering, move on to drag soldering, and finally learn how to apply solder paste and do reflow.Surface mount components! They're hip, they're tiny, and you've probably swallowed a couple accidentally by now. If you're still using those clunky, chunky through-hole components that you found in your grandparents' butter cookie tin, well, it's time to get with the times and learn how to solder the teeny-weeny components of the future!
During this class we'll go over not one, not two, but three different soldering techniques for surface mount components. We'll try our hand at traditional hand-soldering, move on to the fast-paced world of drag soldering, and finally learn how to apply solder paste and do SMT reflow in an upcycled toaster oven we found on the curb-- just like the pros!

This workshop is intended for people with little-to-no prior experience. Get a crash course in fundamentals of robotics while learning how to build a fun skitter robot from the book Homemade Robots.
On Scrubot:
Do not be fooled. Scrub Bot was not the simple sort of bot that materializes overnight when Randy zip tied a bunch of scrub brushes together. No! There was an ineffable cosmic plan that led up to this bot's creation, going back well beyond the day when man, through genetic mutation, first evolved the ability to manufacture zip ties and scrub brushes. This bot is a bona fide cosmic child.
The instructor:
Randy Sarafan is the author of the books "Homemade Robots" and "62 Projects to Make with a Dead Computer." He has worked for Instructables.com for well over a decade and has posted hundreds of tutorials online in a wide range of subjects.

A guided intro to Free Motion Embroidery, a technique in which you use a standard sewing machine needle as a 'pen' to draw with thread.Come try Free Motion Embroidery in this exploratory workshop!
Free motion embroidery, also known as free hand sewing, free machine embroidery and free machine stitching, is a technique in which you use the sewing machine needle as a 'pen' and move the fabric around in any direction under the needle.
During this 3 hour session, beyond sewn images you will be introduced to the various uses for Free Motion Embroidery from mending holes, to crafting sculptures out of thread.
The workshop will start with an overview with samples demonstrating various uses of free motion embroidery. Next we will configure the machine then get into mending a hole in fabric (darning). Once we have a handle on working with fabrics, we will learn how to sew on water soluble material to create sculpture.
All materials and tools will be provided for use during the workshop. You will also receive a resource guide for exploring this technique further on your own.
This workshop is for those with at least a beginners level experience with machine sewing. You must know how to thread a standard domestic sewing machine and sew a straight stitch.
The instructor:
Daniel Ryan Johnston - Brooklyn based queer textile artist, researcher, and creative technologist. I have been creating for the body since 2007. Mixing my love of creepy puppets, wearables and machine embroidery sculpture, my work explores personal experiences with managing mental health, body image and psoriatic arthritis. I am a graduate of Columbia College Chicago (BA), the Fashion Institute of Technology (AAS) and the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU (MPS).

At the end you'll have an original cutting boardIntroduction to hand tool woodworking, wood science, and cutting board building. The class is open to complete beginners interested in getting their first hands-on experience and learning some woodworking fundamentals. In this class you will practice basics like panel glue-ups, handplaning wood flat and square, sanding, and finishing. You will get hands-on guidance in a small environment (2-4 students) and leave with a premium-quality cutting board made of walnut, cherry, and maple of your own design. The board is planned to be approximately 12” x 18” and at least 1.25” thick. Keep it for yourself or give it as a gift!
To make the most of the glue-drying time, we will discuss the trials and tribulations of wood as a natural material and the crafty solutions woodworkers use to build beautiful things with it.
Masks are optional but highly encouraged for sanding.
The Instructor:
I'm Alex P and I'm excited to bring some mondo cool woodworking to Resistor! I've spent the last 3 years absorbing everything I can about putting tools to wood and stumbling my way to becoming a better furniture maker. I hope to make Resistor my new home to learn, share, and build some beautiful projects. Bill says: “Alex is also the world record holder at Black Emperor, and brings major New Yankee Workshop vibes to Resistor's great good fortune.”
