You've acquired a pile of salvaged printer parts, now let's use those motors, buttons, sensors and switches to make a simple trash robot!Your victory is complete! You've wrested scores of motors, buttons, sensors and switches from the innards of scavenged e-waste. But how do we actually use all these gears, belts, pumps, speakers, and other mechanical and electrical doodads?
During this class we'll demonstrate how to make use of all the random components we've acquired. We'll learn how to identify and wire up different types of motors, sensors, and switches, how to reuse gears and timing belts, and how to make things that move and beep and glow! At the end of the class we'll collaborate to make a simple trash robot that, if not exactly useful, should be at least endearing.
This class with be taught by Adam Mayer. Adam is a longtime NYCR member who has been disassembling and resurrecting old equipment for a decade and a half. He has a stack of inkjet printers in his home that is as tall as he is.
This is a follow up to his popular Grab the Guts: Salvaging Electronic Parts from Street Trash class, but works as a stand-alone.
N95 masks are required.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.
Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email classes@nycresistor.com.

What is Arduino?Software setup (IDE, how to program it, the Serial monitor)Reading schematics and wiring diagramsBasics of breadboardingControlling output (blinking/fading an LED)Reading sensor input (with a pushbutton, potentiometer and light sensor)Combining input and outputMaterials
At this in-person class, you will receive a basic electronics starter kit, which contains a starter pack of electronics components and sensors, including a breadboard, wires, light sensor, temperature sensor, LEDs, switches, buzzer and more. You will also receive an Adafruit Metro (Arduino UNO equivalent).
Students should bring their own laptop and install some free software ahead of time:

There's a community of folks building a open source pick and place machine that can be made for less than $2,000. This talk is about them. There's this daunting gap between building ten of something and building a thousand of something. It's too much to do by hand, but too little to justify outsourcing. Brave electronics hackers have spent tens of thousands purchasing commercial automatic pick and place machines in the hope of bridging this gap, however, these machines are far out of reach for most of us.
I've spent the last year among a community of folks building and expanding on a open source pick and place machine that can be made for less than $2,000. Like the early days of hobby 3D printing, there's a lot of brilliant people trying interesting, sometimes wildly different, approaches to hard problems. This talk is about those people. I'll take you through the start of our project and highlight some really interesting challenges and solutions our community has come up with. I'll also talk about the future of our little machine and how you could get involved.
This event will be online via Zoom, and tickets will be Pay-What-You-Wish.
The suggested price for this talk is $15. Refunds up to 24 hours before the event. Event page with Zoom link will become available 1 hour before the event begins. Recording will be available to ticket holders for a minimum of 30 days after the event.
