LoRaWAN und TTN: Offener Abend

Wir treffen uns jeden zweiten Mittwoch zum Thema LoRaWAN/The Things Network (TTN). Im weiteren Sinne geht's also um dieses "Internet of Things" und darüber wollen wir nicht abstrakt faseln, sondern selber machen, ausprobieren was möglich ist und dann gerne auf dieser Basis philosophieren.

Im vierwöchigen Wechsel gibt's einmal einen "Offenen Abend" und einmal den "Bastelabend":
- Beim OFFENEN ABEND haben wir Zeit für alle deine/eure Fragen und Ideen. Alle Anwesenden und das Kernteam erklären gerne alles zum Thema von A bis Z. Manchmal gibt's zum Anfang vielleicht sogar einen Vortrag.
- Beim BAUABEND soll Zeit sein an konkreten Projekten zu arbeiten. Hier ist natürlich auch jeder willkommen und vor allem könnt' ihr eure eigenen Bastelprojekte mitbringen um daran zu arbeiten - Werkzeug und Unterstützung ist vorhanden. Evtl. hat das Kernteam an diesem Abend nur nicht Zeit Neulingen alle Grundlagen ganz in Ruhe zu erklären, was aber keinen vom Reinschauen abhalten soll.

Ruhrgebi3D ist eine Gruppe von Makern aus dem Ruhrpott. Ein Ziel ist es, den Menschen in unserer Region zu zeigen, dass es nach Kohle und Co. wieder etwas geben kann, was uns gemeinsam nach vorne bringt. Dazu zählen digitale Fertigungstechnologien wie der 3D-Druck sowie das sogenannte Lasercutting. Auf unseren Treffen bieten wir den Besuchern die Möglichkeit, erste Berührungsängste über Bord zu werfen und Teil der Bewegung zu werden.

Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos und jeder ist herzlich Willkommen uns im Labor zu besuchen :-)

Designing Feminist Interfaces: Smart Assistant Skill Building

Technology is often described as ‘disruptive’, while it serves to perpetuate existing power structures. It’s not an accident, for instance, that our technologies that function effectively as “caregivers” or “secretaries” are designed to have female voices. What does it mean to imagine an alternative, feminist voice interface? Can we hack voice interfaces to be more feminist?

In this workshop, we’ll work together to imagine and prototype possible futures for voice technologies. Through a series of speculative design exercises, we’ll think about and discuss what voice technologies and software could look like if we designed them in line with the central commitments of feminism: participation, agency, embodiment, equity, empowerment, plurality, and justice. Taking our discussion as inspiration, we’ll explore how we can hack voice technologies and bring them in line with feminist principles, such as using JavaScript to build custom Alexa skills that subvert the practices of current smart assistants. This workshop asks participants to think speculatively about how technology can impact feminism, but we also acknowledge that there’s no one tech solution to fix these larger issues.

Who is teaching?
tendernet is an an all-female collective of artists, writers, engineers, researchers, designers, educators and activists whose work explores speculative design, networked devices, surveillance, and privacy through an intersectional feminist framework. Most recently, the collective has led workshops, produced zines, given talks, and written on topics as diverse as: feminist interfaces and critical design, IoT and privacy, alternatives to Alexa voice assistants, the surveillance of female bodies, and self-tracking & disciplinary power. tendernet consists of Zoe Bachman, Katrina Peterson, and Becca Ricks.

I've been doing watercolours since I was a little child. Creating great images is as much about technical understanding as it is about developing a way of seeing, a way of being. I usually do watercolours on the streets, or at events, with a sketch book and a portable kit. I do it because I deeply love to do it. 

In this class I'll show a bit about painting techniques and materials. We' will discuss some great watercolour pieces that have been done in the last few centuries. We'll do some exercises. We will have fun together.

During the talk, Vanessa will present some of her new work, describe a bit of her process and most of all, she will try to explain a bit of the research that sustains her art practice.

Dieser Frage wollen wir auf den Grund gehen, uns ansehen welche verschiedenen Verfahren des 3D Drucks es gibt, was privat möglich ist und was die Industrie da so treibt. Neben den technischen Möglichkeiten gucken wir uns natürlich auch an wie jede_r selbst innerhalb weniger Minuten einfache Objekte designen und dann drucken kann. Kleinere Objekte die ihr als .stl mitbringt drucken wir gerne direkt vor Ort.

Cut and Etch Your Own Designs with Our Laser Cutter

Harness the power of an Eplilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, we'll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the "go" button on the laser. We'll cover safety, basic file preparation, and learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you'll have made a plaque for your door, a keychain, a simple box or something slightly ambitious. (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 32" x 20" so buy materials accordingly. Keep in mind that large-scale, complex, multi-cut projects may not be appropriate for the class. Our goal is to teach you how to use the tool, not how to reinvent the Sistine Chapel in one afternoon.

Please bring a laptop and a USB jump drive. You may choose to upload and install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Monday or Thursday Craft Nights. (See our website for more info.)

This is not your typical craft class.  Make-Along is a self-guided craft workshop where participants learn new skills, explore new materials and make great things!

In this session we'll be exploring how to make lovely floating plant planets known as kokedamas, or moss balls, or awesome things you totally want to learn how to make. PLUS we'll time travel back to the 70's and show you some macrame techniques to make your kokedama hang in the most groovy kind of way.
Are you a beginner?  We'll provide materials for including moss, string, various plants, and inspiration. 
Are you a master?  Show off your skills and inspire others!  Bring a project, use our materials and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.

This class is a basic introduction to creating PCBs using Autodesk's Eagle software. Students will learn how to use Eagle to go from a breadboard to a PCB design file that is ready to be sent out for manufacturing. This allows you to take your DIY electronics projects off of protoboards and to the next level. In this course, students will have the opportunity to select one of three pre-defined breadboard circuits to work from in designing their circuit board. Make Things Move: Intro to Motor Control with Arduino

Have a project you want to make move?  From RC cars, Robot Arms, or 3D printers, this class gets you started learning how to use a variety of motors. Learn about the different types of motors and make them move! This class will combine a discussion of motors best-practices as well as hands-on experience controlling them with an Arduino. Ticket price includes all the suppiles you'll need (and get to take home!).
