Getting started programming microcontrollers with CircuitPython

Want to learn Python? What about learning the easiest way to learn to code using a microcontroller?

CircuitPython is a programming language designed to simplify experimenting and learning to code on low-cost microcontroller boards. CircuitPython adds hardware support to the core Python language. If you already have Python knowledge, you can easily apply that to using CircuitPython. If you have no previous experience, it's really simple to get started! Learning CircuitPython is learning Python. We're going to be using the Adafruit Circuit Playground Express to explore the basics of Python using CircuitPython. 

This class is intended for anyone interested in learning about programming using Python on microcontrollers - from the absolute beginner who has never touched a microcontroller before to someone who uses Python for work/academia. This class is bring your own Micro USB Cable (BYOMUSB), we'll have a few extra on-hand but please bring one for yourself.

This class is taught by Brent Rubell, an engineer at Adafruit Industries, and hosted by NYC Resistor member Nick Vermeer.

Soldering is one of the most important skills you'll need for working with electronics. Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and desoldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations.

No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

This class will be taught by Resistor members Jared Klett.

Late Summer Cocktail Bitters: August Make-Along!

This is not your typical craft class. Make-Along is a self-guided craft workshop where participants learn new skills, explore new materials and make great things!
August’s Topic: Mixing Custom Bitters!
In this session we’ll be experimenting with smell and taste to concoct custom bitters for your late summer beverage enjoyment! We’ll have a huge variety of tinctures on hand for you to explore, and handy dropper bottles you can use to bring your creations home with you!
Bitters are traditionally used in cocktails, but they’re also perfect for livening up a glass of seltzer or adding a little kick of flavor to a recipe. If you’re an old hand at bitters, this is a perfect chance to cook up something brand new; and if you’re a beginner, we’ll be happy to help you assemble some promising tincture combos!
And did we mention that Resistor is air conditioned?
Typically classes at NYC Resistor are 18+, but due to using alcohol as raw materials, this one will be restricted to 21+.

Kommt mit euren Ideen ins Verschwörhaus und stellt sie im Lab vor. Habt ihr kein konkretes Projekt und seid auf der Suche nach Inspiration? Don’t worry! Lasst euch von den anderen inspirieren oder fragt im Lab nach kleinen Herausforderungen. Wie bei den Workshops begleiten euch auch im Lab unsere tollen Mentor*innen.

Der Raspberry Pi ist ein EInplatinencomputer, der urspünglich für Lehrzwecke entwickelt wurde. In den letzten Jahren gewann er immer mehr an Beliebtheit bei Hobbybastlern, was ihn auch ausserhalb seines ursprünglichen Zwecke beliebt machte. Sei dem gibt es eine große Community, die viele Projekte in unterschiedlichen Bereichen entwickelt und gabaut haben.

Wir wollen uns ein paar praktische Beispiele gemeinsam ansehen und selber mal ausprobieren. Wie kann ich meinen eigenen DNS-Forwarder installieren, was kann ich mit einem "pi-in-the-middle" machen? Das machen wir anhand von zwei PIs die wir in der Gruppe aufsetzen und konfigurieren.

Cut and Etch Your Own Designs with Our Laser Cutter

These classes fill up, reserve your spot now!
Harness the power of an Eplilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, we'll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the "go" button on the laser. We'll cover safety, basic file preparation, and learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you'll have made a plaque for your door, a keychain, a simple box or something slightly ambitious. (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 32" x 20" so buy materials accordingly. Keep in mind that large-scale, complex, multi-cut projects may not be appropriate for the class. Our goal is to teach you how to use the tool, not how to reinvent the Sistine Chapel in one afternoon.

Please bring a laptop and a USB jump drive. You may choose to upload and install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Monday or Thursday Craft Nights. (See our website for more info.)

Speciaal voor deelnemers die de Maakplek nog niet van binnen en van buiten kennen. Workshop project (door)starten.

Je zit met een idee en je weet nog niet hoe je het precies gaat doen. De Maakplek heeft veel handig gereedschap maar je weet niet waar of hoe je het handig inzet. Misschien weet je al wel wat je wil maken maar nog niet hoe.

Op deze avond beginnen we met ieder z’n project, checken we waar je nu bent en maken we met z’n allen een plan hoe jij jou project kunt uitvoeren. Het is immers de bedoeling dat je na deze workshop veel zelfstandiger aan de slag kunt in de Maakplek.

Programma:
- 19.00 inloop
- 19.30 Start: rondje projecten horen en samen plannen maken.
- 20.30 Aan de slag!
- 22.00 Samen afronden, wat waren de lessen?
- 22.30 Eind.

Ook heel welkom voor deelnemers die de Maakplek wel goed kennen, dan kun je mede deelnemers vast op weg helpen.
