Intro to 3D Printing and 3D Design

A class for 3D newcomers who want to learn the basics of creating 3D models and printing them. Your instructor will take you through key concepts of 3D printing, demo the technology on our printers, and lead the class through the design process of creating a model and preparing it to print. We'll talk about creating functional objects, creative objects, available materials, print reliability, and compare various printer models and features.

Please bring a laptop with working WiFi and a mouse with a scroll wheel. (You can technically get by without the mouse but it's STRONGLY recommended.) We'll be using free-to-use Autodesk software in the design portion of the class. To speed things along, please sign up for an Autodesk account at https://www.tinkercad.com/ It would also smooth things along if you download and install the latest version of Meshmixer in advance of the class. https://www.meshmixer.com/

Cybersecurity training has become the new martial arts training as most of what we do now exists online. In this class, we'll start you off with the fundamentals of account security, including how to choose and store passwords safely with Bitwarden, an open source password manager. We’ll also show you how to get started with the strongest and best recommended method for defending against phishing attacks: U2F hardware tokens, such as Yubikeys. These devices give your online accounts, such as Gmail, Dropbox, Twitter and Facebook a strong level of protection recommended for journalists investigating powerful interests in high-risk areas, and you'll get one for free with this class!

Students will need to bring their own laptop and smartphone to participate.

Wir treffen uns jeden zweiten Mittwoch zum Thema LoRaWAN/The Things Network (TTN). Im weiteren Sinne geht's also um dieses "Internet of Things" und darüber wollen wir nicht abstrakt faseln, sondern selber machen, ausprobieren was möglich ist und dann gerne auf dieser Basis philosophieren.


** ACHTUNG** Entgegen des normalen Turnus ist am 5.6. nur "offene Tür". Das heißt, alle, die an Projekten arbeiten, können die Werkstätten nutzen und sich austauschen, es gibt aber urlaubs- und abwesenheitsbedingt ausdrücklich *keine* Ansprechpersonen für EinsteigerInnen.

Im vierwöchigen Wechsel gibt's einmal einen "Offenen Abend" und einmal den "Bastelabend":
- Beim OFFENEN ABEND haben wir Zeit für alle deine/eure Fragen und Ideen. Alle Anwesenden und das Kernteam erklären gerne alles zum Thema von A bis Z. Manchmal gibt's zum Anfang vielleicht sogar einen Vortrag.
- Beim BAUABEND soll Zeit sein an konkreten Projekten zu arbeiten. Hier ist natürlich auch jeder willkommen und vor allem könnt' ihr eure eigenen Bastelprojekte mitbringen um daran zu arbeiten - Werkzeug und Unterstützung ist vorhanden. Evtl. hat das Kernteam an diesem Abend nur nicht Zeit Neulingen alle Grundlagen ganz in Ruhe zu erklären, was aber keinen vom Reinschauen abhalten soll.

[Open lecture] Bitcoin Technology - Selected Basic Details & A New End-To-End Verifiable Internet-Voting Protocol

Lecture by Marian Srebrny (Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland)

This talk will be a brief presentation of the landscape of the most important and most interesting
issues and events focused on Bitcoin protocol design/cryptanalysis: the bitcoin story – e-gold,
computational workload complexity, the main hero: cryptographic hash functions, proof-of-
work concept, no trusted third party, collective/multiparty authority, public ledger of all
transactions, of bitcoin technology: addresses/accounts, coin mining, transactions, e-signatures,
incentives, majority consensus decisions, et cetera.
The second part of this talk is motivated by the famous recent mishaps of Facebook. By
way of response from the cryptographic community, we will focus on trust, network security,
and privacy deployed in parallel and distributed systems. Those issues are of crucial importance
these days because various tasks are allocated to, and information is exchanged among the
system devices that may belong to different users. It will highlight recent advances in trust,
security, and privacy for emerging parallel and distributed systems.
We’ll present a new design of a protocol of End-to-End Verifiable e-voting over the
Internet, intended for a rather small group of voters. A particular emphasis in our e-voting
protocol is on a guarantee that each voter can efficiently verify if her vote is adequately
recorded, as cast, and counted in the tally, as recorded. The procedure avoids sabotage,
tampering or forging, due to conceivable faked hardware or software. The second important
property of the protocol is that no voter can prove whom she has voted for. This eliminates, or
at least essentially restricts, the possibility of coercion, buying or selling the votes.
Technically, the protocol is based on secret sharing methods, multi-party computation,
and modular arithmetic with the Chinese Remainder Theorem, and it uses blockchain technique
with collective distributed Satoshi cosensus.

Pickling! June Make-Along

This is not your typical craft class.
June's Topic:  Pickling!
This month we will learn the basics of home pickling! Get hands-on instruction on how to lacto-ferment vegetables for flavor, produce preservation and for digestive health.  
We will be making cucumber pickles and sauerkraut. During the course of the session we will cover the basics of how lacto-fermentation works, how to set the stage for lacto-fermentation, and what pitfalls to avoid and tips and tricks for reliable and tasty pickles. At the end of the session you get to take containers of the prepped cucumbers and cabbage home to complete the fermentation and enjoy the sour fruits of your labor.  
After the class you will have the knowledge and reusable containers to continue to pickle any vegetables your heart desires!  
No experience is necessary! Kitchen tools, produce and fermentation containers will be provided. We will use mandolin slicers for the bulk of the cabbage slicing so it is fine if you come without ninja knife skills
Are you a beginner?  We'll provide materials including yarn, dye, and all the other necessary things to make gorgeous colors of your imagination!
Are you a master?  Show off your skills and inspire others!  Bring a project, use our materials and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.

Soldering is one of the most important skills you'll need for working with electronics. Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and desoldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations.

No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Cut and Etch Your Own Designs with Our Laser Cutter

These classes fill up, reserve your spot now!
Harness the power of an Eplilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, we'll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the "go" button on the laser. We'll cover safety, basic file preparation, and learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you'll have made a plaque for your door, a keychain, a simple box or something slightly ambitious. (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 32" x 20" so buy materials accordingly. Keep in mind that large-scale, complex, multi-cut projects may not be appropriate for the class. Our goal is to teach you how to use the tool, not how to reinvent the Sistine Chapel in one afternoon.

Please bring a laptop and a USB jump drive. You may choose to upload and install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Monday or Thursday Craft Nights. (See our website for more info.)

Want to get started with physical computing?
Learn to program an Arduino and interact with the physical world! In this class, we’ll cover an introduction to Arduino and learn how to manipulate outputs based on sensor inputs.
Topics covered


What is Arduino?


Software setup (IDE, how to program it, the Serial monitor)


Reading schematics and wiring diagrams


Basics of breadboarding


Controlling output (blinking/fading an LED)


Reading sensor input (with a pushbutton, potentiometer and light sensor)


Combining input and output



Materials
At this class you will receive a basic electronics starter kit, which contains a starter pack of electronics components and sensors, including a breadboard, wires, light sensor, temperature sensor, LEDs, switches, buzzer and more. You will also receive an Adafruit Metro (Arduino UNO equivalent).
Students should bring their own laptop and install some free software ahead of time:

Who should take this class?
Basic computer knowledge is assumed, and we'll refresh a few concepts from high school physics and math. No previous experience with coding or circuits is required.

Please be ready to start at 1pm!  We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you're interested, you may want to sign up early.
