Ralf Schreiber & Uwe Schüler: Radionica // Workshop: Tin-Can Motor Kalimba

Radiona.org poziva na radionicu Tin-Can Motor Kalimba koju vode Ralf Schreiber i Uwe Schüler (Njemačka) u petak, 2. listopada 2026. od 18 sati u Radioni . Tin-Can Motor Kalimba je elektromehanički instrument namijenjen eksperimentiranju sa zvukom, ritmom i repetitivnim strukturama. Sastoji se od limenke, žica, motora s prijenosom i kontaktnog mikrofona te upravljačke elektronike koja omogućuje podešavanje brzine motora i razine mikrofonskog signala. Na radionici ćemo najprije zalemiti upravljačku elektroniku na prethodno pripremljenu tiskanu pločicu, a zatim sastaviti mehaničke dijelove instrumenta. O voditeljima: Uwe Schüler , inženjer elektronike, voli razvijati elektroničke i elektroakustične zvučne objekte i glazbene instrumente, kao i svjetlosne objekte. Njegovi objekti, akcije i radionice uvijek kritiziraju potrošačko društvo i nude mu alternative kroz korištenje recikliranih materijala i „uradi sam“ pristupa. Također mu je važno da su veće skupine sudionika uključene u umjetnički proces rada u duhu socijalne skulpture. Tijekom godina izlagao i održavao edukaciju na mnogim inozemnim festivalima poput: Transmediale Berlin, Ars Electronica Linz, Shift Festival Basel, Camp, Tinguely-Museum Basel, Interfiction Kassel, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, DIY festivali u Zürichu i Dresdenu, NoBudget-Medienfestival Tübingen, Homemade Labor Schweiz, Kunstuni Linz, HfG Karlsruhe, Lab30 Augsburg, FEZ Berlin i mnogim drugim. O voditelju: Njemački medijski umjetnik i haker Ralf Schreiber radi s elektronikom, motorima, mikrofonima i malim zvučnicima. To ga vodi do kinetičkih zvučnih i svjetlosnih instalacija kao i elektronske glazbe. Njegov rad ima razigran i eksperimentalan pristup. Fokusira se na minimalnu robotiku, nasumične procese i samoodržive sustave. Za napajanje često koristi male solarne ćelije kako bi istraživao niskoenergetske procese pretvorbe svjetlosti u kretanje i zvuk. Rezultat njegovih instalacija je minimalan, što znači da su zvukovi vrlo tihi, a pokreti ponekad na rubu percepcije. Osim toga, zalaže se za otvoreni hardver i redovito nudi radionice s konceptima sklopova i nacrtima svojih radova. U centru njegovog dosadašnjeg djelovanja višegodišnji je projekt Žive čestice, autonomna audio-kinetička instalacija u uvijek novoj konstelaciji solarno pogonjenih, interaktivnih mini robot-modula. Diplomirao je na minsterskoj Umjetničkoj školi i nastavio školovanje na Akademiji za medijske umjetnosti u Koelnu. Izlagao je na brojnim izložbama u Njemačkoj i svijetu. Tin-Can Motor Kalimba is an electromechanical instrument designed for experimenting with sound, rhythm and repetitive structures. It consists of a tin can, wires, a gear motor and a contact microphone, together with control electronics that allow the motor speed and microphone gain to be adjusted. During the workshop, we will first solder the control electronics onto a pre-prepared circuit board and then assemble the mechanical parts of the instrument. Once the instrument is completed, we will explore its sonic possibilities together, experimenting with different playing techniques and repetitive rhythmic structures. No prior knowledge of electronics is required. About the workshop leaders: Uwe Schüler is an electronics engineer who enjoys developing electronic and electroacoustic sound objects and musical instruments, as well as light-based objects. His objects, actions and workshops critically engage with consumer society and propose alternatives through the use of recycled materials and DIY approaches. It is also important to his practice that larger groups of participants become involved in the artistic process, in the spirit of social sculpture. Over the years, he has exhibited and led educational programmes and workshops at numerous international festivals and institutions, including Transmediale Berlin, Ars Electronica Linz, Shift Festival Basel, CAMP, Museum Tinguely Basel, Interfiction Kassel, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, DIY festivals in Zurich and Dresden, NoBudget Medienfestival Tübingen, Homemade Labor Switzerland, Kunstuniversität Linz, HfG Karlsruhe, Lab30 Augsburg, FEZ Berlin and many others. German media artist and hacker Ralf Schreiber works with electronics, motors, microphones and small loudspeakers, creating kinetic sound and light installations as well as electronic music. His work takes a playful and experimental approach, focusing on minimal robotics, random processes and self-sustaining systems. He often uses small solar cells as a power source to explore low-energy processes that transform light into movement and sound. His installations are deliberately minimal, with sounds that are often very quiet and movements that sometimes take place at the edge of perception. He is also an advocate of open hardware and regularly leads workshops in which he shares circuit concepts and construction plans for his works. At the centre of his long-term artistic practice is the multi-year project Living Particles , an autonomous audio-kinetic installation consisting of ever-changing constellations of solar-powered, interactive miniature robotic modules. He graduated from the Münster Academy of Art and continued his studies at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in Germany and internationally. With the arrival of autumn, Paul Grandjean invites anyone interested in music production to new sessions at Radiona. These sessions are designed to explore the ways you want to create music – whether it’s techno, ambient, experimental, or something else entirely. Ableton is merely a tool; the real focus of the sessions is you and your sound. Dates: 15th and 22nd October 2026. Whether it’s : Techno, ambient, dub, experimental, noise, or something that doesn’t really have a name. Ableton is just the tool. We’ll explore sampling, synthesis, sound design, resampling and more using tools such as Sampler, Simpler, Operator, Analog, Collision, as well as some of my favorite plugins, tricks and creative workflows. We’ll dig into sounds, tear them apart, process them, resample them and build them back into something else. You’ll start building your own sample library, while discovering different ways to make sounds feel more alive, strange, heavy, deep, broken or simply your own. And somewhere in all of this, we’ll work on the most important part: Learning how to listen. Not learning Ableton for the sake of knowing Ableton — but using it to get closer to the sound you have in your head. Groups stay small. No fixed formula, no race to finish a syllabus. We can spend more time on what actually interests you, experiment together, and follow the direction your music takes. Before we start, I’ll ask you for two small playlists: 5 tracks of your all time favorites. + 5 tracks that represent where you’d like to go. I’ll listen to them beforehand and use them to get a feeling for your references, your taste and the kind of territory you want to explore. Free 2-hour introduction To start things off, I’m offering a free 2-hour intro session. Come meet, bring some sounds, open Ableton, make some noise, ask questions, experiment — and see where it goes. No pressure. No need to already know everything.
