Martin Howse – artist-in-residence @ Radiona.org

🇭🇷 · Radiona · deborah

British artist, researcher and experimental technologist Martin Howse is currently artist-in-residence at Radiona, where he is developing new work within his ongoing exploration of the relationships between technology, geology, computation and material processes. Photo: Martin Howse (cc) Martin Howse’s artistic practice explores the relationships between the Earth, technology, computation and the human psyche. Working across experimental electronics, sound, performance, installation, software and artistic research, he investigates how geological and geophysical processes intersect with digital systems and technological infrastructures. A central concept in his work is psychogeophysics – an experimental approach connecting geophysical phenomena, technological systems and subjective experience. Through performances, laboratories, walks, workshops and self-built electronic devices, Howse makes normally invisible processes perceptible, including electromagnetic activity, geological signals and the material processes underlying computation. His practice challenges the idea of technology as something immaterial, instead drawing attention to its physical, geological and ecological foundations. Photo: Anna Bastyrova (c) Howse is also the creator of the ERD modular synthesizer series and founder of the Tiny Mining community, projects that further explore the material and ecological dimensions of electronics, computation and technological extraction. BIO: Martin Howse is a British artist, researcher and experimental technologist whose work investigates relationships between geological and geophysical phenomena, software, electronics and the human psyche. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London and has developed an interdisciplinary practice spanning sound, performance, installation, experimental hardware and software, writing and artistic research. From 1998 to 2005, Howse directed ap , a software performance group working with electronic waste and developing early approaches to digital glitch. Between 2007 and 2009 he organised a regular programme of workshops, micro-residencies and salons in Berlin, and he has since initiated numerous open-laboratory and collaborative research projects. His work has been presented internationally through exhibitions, performances, lectures, workshops and residencies, including at institutions and events such as transmediale and Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, V2_ in Rotterdam, ICA London, TEA Tenerife and the Taipei Biennale. In 2005 his project ap0201 , installed in the Mojave Desert, received first prize at the VIDA 8.0 Art & Artificial Life International Awards. His ongoing projects include the ERD modular synthesizer series , experimental investigations into earth-based computation and radio mycelium, and Tiny Mining , a project examining the extraction of technologically valuable minerals from the human body. Recent work continues his long-term investigation into the material foundations of computation and the entanglement of technological, geological and biological systems. Raising a Kid Who Asks “How Does That Work?”

🇨🇦 · Maker Kids · Samantha Dinelle

September 25, 2026 Raising a curious kid, the kind who constantly asks “how does that work?”, is one of the best things you can do for their learning . Curiosity drives kids to explore, question, and figure things out, and it is closely linked to how well they do in school. You nurture it by encouraging questions, giving hands-on things to explore, and resisting the urge to hand over every answer. Why curiosity matters more than you think Curiosity is not just cute; it is a genuine engine of learning. A study of 6,200 children found that greater curiosity was linked to higher reading and math achievement in kindergarten, and that curiosity was as important as a child’s ability to focus and control impulses. Curious kids learn more, in part because they want to. The encouraging part for parents is that curiosity can be nurtured. The “how does that work?” instinct is not fixed, it grows or fades depending on whether it gets fed. Source: Shah et al., Pediatric Research (2018) How to raise a curious kid A few simple habits keep curiosity alive: Welcome the questions. Resist giving every answer. Give them things to take apart and build. Follow their interests. Let them be a little bored. Where hands-on building comes in Curiosity thrives when there is something real to explore. Building a game, programming a robot, or designing a model turns “how does that work?” into “let me try and find out.” Instead of watching, kids get to open the hood and experiment, which is exactly how curiosity becomes capability. That is the heart of hands-on learning: give a curious kid real things to build, and their natural questions turn into real skills. Feed your kid’s curiosity with real things to build. Explore MakerKids programs in Leaside, Bloor West Village, Mississauga, and virtually. FAQ Why is curiosity important for kids? Curiosity drives kids to explore and learn, and research links it to higher reading and math achievement, as important as a child’s ability to focus. Curious kids tend to learn more because they want to. Can you actually teach or nurture curiosity? Yes. Curiosity grows when it is fed. Welcoming questions, giving hands-on things to explore, following a child’s interests, and not rushing to hand over every answer all help keep it alive. How do I encourage my child to ask questions? Respond to questions with enthusiasm, ask “what do you think?” before answering, and give them real things to take apart and build. Showing that questions are welcome keeps them coming. How does hands-on building help curious kids? It gives curiosity something real to chase. Building a game or robot turns “how does that work?” into hands-on experimenting, which is how curiosity becomes genuine skill. Rails World 2026: Ruby on Rails è ancora il re (o almeno ci prova con stile)

🇮🇹 · /root · Lamberto Tedaldi

Ovviamente, siamo in Italia e potresti pensare: «E a me cosa me ne frega?

Source: Lili Reinhart Can’t Find a Producer for her Lesbian Vampire Project

The Holy Grail of Rocketry in Sight

🇺🇸 · Huntsville Alabama L5 Society (HAL5) - Project HALO · National Space Society

OPINION By Dale Skran SpaceX has recently published a 28-minute high-quality video titled “Holy Grail of Rocketry.” It can be found on the SpaceX website , where it can also be downloaded. It has also been republished on YouTube . Filmed in 4K, we are shown incredible images of Starship flight 13, and even more amazing footage of the recovery of the Starship from the Indian Ocean. Far from being a panegyric to Elon Musk, it is a straight corporate-produced documentary unsurprisingly lacking the insistence some directors have on finding a dark side to every achievement. I personally find the unexpected survival of Starship after a planned water landing, followed by a dramatic sea recovery operation, especially exciting. Regardless of the complaints of numerous naysayers, it is increasingly clear that the Starship heat shield has become more robust over time. The effort required and the amount of time needed to convey the floating Starship to Boca Chica serves as a reminder of the vastness of Earth’s oceans, and the danger involved in navigating them. The semi-submersible vessel used to transport the Starship was new to me – and an amazing sight to behold in action. A final point of interest comes from never-before-seen footage of the factory used to manufacture heat shield tiles. The shuttle tiles were individually shaped and required substantial hand labor to produce. At SpaceX a vast, specialized machine forms and bakes the mostly uniform tiles with minimal human intervention, although they do appear to be mounted on the Ship with human hands. In a more innocent time, this fascinating documentary would be greeted the widespread applause. However, at least three forces combine to heap scorn on everything done by SpaceX. First, now that SpaceX is public, a substantial short interest exists on the stock. “Short selling” occurs when investors borrow shares, which they then sell. But at some point, they have to buy back those shares to cover the loan. Short sellers are betting that the stock will drop in value, allowing them to “cover” their borrowing at a lower cost than their initial outlay. But if the stock rises, short sellers have potentially unlimited losses. There is nothing illegal or untoward about short selling – it is part of the ecosystem that makes the stock market work. But some of those short sellers are unscrupulous and pay shady sources to create misleading or false stories about a company to drive down the stock price. The result is that there exists a well-funded group with a financial incentive to spread negative stories about SpaceX. Second, Elon Musk’s popularity has been driven to new lows by reaction to his political activities, with the result that often anything he or his companies do or say is greeted with a tidal wave of highly negative partisan postings. Finally, even among the most ardent space enthusiasts, there is in some circles a sense of disappointment and increasing frustration with SpaceX. The sources of these feelings are worth deeper examination. One aspect is that many on the SpaceX bandwagon were excited by Musk’s vison of a multi-planetary society and a city on Mars. Recently Musk has refocused on the Moon and building data centers in space, while still asserting that Mars is in the plan. For the true-blue “Martians” this change of direction is disheartening, although others welcome it, and Musk’s announced intention of building a mass driver on the Moon could result in a huge leap forward for the space settlement vision of Gerard K. O’Neill. Another aspect is that SpaceX has been the target of criticism that it does not adequately support the Artemis program. For these critics, SpaceX spends too much effort on making Starship fully reusable and launching Starlink satellites, and too little on meeting contractual milestones for NASA related to landing on the Moon. Yet another aspect lies in the recent announcement that Space is phasing out Falcon 9 and Dragon flights in the not very distant future depending on Starship becoming fully operational. This presents an enormous challenge to hundreds of companies that have come to rely on SpaceX for frequent, reliable, and low-cost access to space. It is important to keep all these matters in perspective. As space becomes a larger and more important part of the global economy, it was inevitable that the space economy would become more like other industries, with shady short-sellers blasting out FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt), and space companies increasingly engaged with the Pentagon. And companies like SpaceX would be tempted, once public, to focus much more directly on their stock price and cash flow. For many space enthusiasts, this feels like a grim and unhappy comedown from the Star Trek fantasy some have entertained. There is, however, a silver lining in this cloud. SpaceX’s withdrawal of the F9/Dragon from the market will light a fire in the hearts of those working at Stoke Space, Relativity, Blue Origin, Rocket Lab, and others. One great company is a thin reed to rest our future in space on. We need a dozen space companies as successful as SpaceX, all competing to provide better and less expensive space services. The goal of the NSS has always been, and must continue to be robust, fair competition in space services. The best answer to concerns about SpaceX lie not in nationalization or other absurdities, but in supporting a growing, robust space launch industry that rapidly drives down the cost of reaching space. The upcoming flight 14 of Starship will be a key step on the road to that future, but it is just one step. And we are not far from the true Holy Grail of Rocketry – not just one fully reusable vehicle, but many, from many companies. Good luck to them all! © 2026 Dale Skran Image: Starship sea recovery. Addio After Effects?

Come fa? Source: Opus 5.5 is good at explainer videos

Addio Microsoft? I Paesi Bassi provano a hackerare lo Stato (in senso buono)

🇮🇹 · /root · Lamberto Tedaldi

Ovviamente, guardando all’Italia, la cosa suona quasi come fantascienza. Newsletter #9 - Nagrania z XV P.I.W.O., wycieczka do Berlina, zakładamy federację, rozbudowujemy HS, inne wydarzenia

Były wycieczki, nowe inicjatywy i sporo pracy nad rozwojem naszej przestrzeni. Dziś nasze stowarzyszenie liczy już 47 aktywnych członków. Niedługo stukną nam dwa lata, więc powoli przygotowujemy się do pierwszego Walnego Zebrania Członków. Równolegle zaczynamy prace nad kolejną edycją P.I.W.O. i innymi wydarzeniami. Zapraszam do lektury! Z pewnością będziemy organizować kolejne tego typu wycieczki, więc jeśli chcecie jeździć razem z nami, zapraszamy do dołączenia do naszej inicjatywy. Mykoryza będzie zrzeszać hakerspejsy, LUG-i i inne organizacje skupione wokół wolnego oprogramowania, kultury hakerskiej i otwartych technologii. Gulaschprogrammiernacht . We wrześniu odbył się V. Kongres Regeneracja , gdzie nasz przedstawiciel – voltar13 – wziął udział w panelu dyskusyjnym o wolnym oprogramowaniu i suwerenności cyfrowej.

September

🇩🇪 · CCCAC · Chaos Computer Club Aachen e.V.

Diesen Samstag (26. At the retro gaming evening this Saturday (September 26th) we want to take a look at copy protection schemes over the years. From „classic“ methods like code wheels and „uncopyable“ manuals to modern DRM methods like Denuvo we‘ll show a bit of everything. The presentation will only cover the basics, there will be plenty of time for discussion and demos afterwards.
