We visited the future home of the Open Science Foundation , which is currently being established at the former Mystery Park in Interlaken, Switzerland. The mission of the Open Science Foundation is to promote open science, including Open Hardware, Open Health, and Open Bio. The center is expected to open in late 2026 and will offer open calls for projects as well as open science fellowships. Together with Jean-Baptiste Labrune , we prototyped the Open Biocenter : a remotely operated platform for biological experiments. The platform allows an operator to execute and direct biological protocols without being physically on site. The operator can be either a person or an autonomous agent.

Tarkoitus oli järjestää tapahtuma heinäkuussa 2027 alun perin Majvikissä, mutta myöhemmin tapahtumapaikaksi vaihtui Hotelli Siuntio . Nyt kuitenkin Helsinki Hacklab on päättänyt vetäytyä projektin järjestämisvastuusta. Tärkeimpänä syynä tähän on oman toimintamme priorisointi. Yläkerran remontti ja siihen liittyvän portaikon rakentaminen on viivästynyt mm. rakennuslupa-asioiden vuoksi ja on alkamassa vasta nyt loppuvuodesta 2026. Helsinki Hacklab ry Withdraws from Organizing the Radio Camp At its June meeting, the board of the Finnish Amateur Radio League (SRAL) awarded the right to organize the 2027 summer camp to a joint project by Kauniaisten Radiokerho , Polyteknikkojen Radiokerho , and Helsinki Hacklab. The event was originally planned to take place in Majvik, but the venue was later changed to Hotelli Siuntio , with the camp scheduled for July 2027. Helsinki Hacklab has now decided to withdraw from the project. The main reason is the need to prioritize our own activities. The renovation of our upstairs facilities, including the construction of a new staircase, has been delayed due in part to building permit issues and is only now expected to begin toward the end of 2026. The electronics and radio activities are specifically moving to the upstairs space, which means that many of the same people who would be involved in organizing the summer camp are also heavily involved in the renovation project. Another reason is the division of responsibilities between the three associations, particularly how any profits or losses would be shared. The associations have not been able to reach a clear agreement on this issue in their discussions. From Hacklab’s perspective, a model based only on the number of volunteers was not considered fair, and no better alternative could be developed. There is no major drama involved; we simply decided to withdraw before any problems arose. The camp is nevertheless still going ahead under the leadership of the remaining associations. The door has also been left open for Hacklab to organize some programme or a side event at the camp, and volunteers from our association are welcome to take part in organizing the event even though Helsinki Hacklab is no longer one of the organizations formally responsible for the camp. This weekend partners of SudoRoom are holding the Exodus Tour at the OmniCommons. The Exodus Tour is a series of Workshops on Digital Marronage . The workshops are free of charge. Digital marronage is about reclaiming our love and relationships by reviving protocols from ancestries for connecting with each other. This is not a coding Bootcamp. It’s a REVIVAL . Together, these collages will become a shared repository of “fugitive protocols” — alternative ways of building and being on the web. ~4 hours On day three, we’ll explore how the internet works. This three-hour workshop explores the physical components of connectivity and how the internet actually reaches us. Participants will trace a path from the undersea cables that carry global data to the local hardware that makes everyday connection possible, and then build a mini-version of the internet themselves. Drawing on familiar experiences—like typing a web address into a browser or holding a phone by a window for better signal—we’ll translate intuitive knowledge into foundational skills for creating independent networks. Together, we’ll experiment with building portable and mesh networks that place the power of connectivity in our own hands, rather than leaving it to the shifting preferences of an expanding technocracy. ~3 hours
