ChatGPT e la Congettura di Jacobian: l’IA sta davvero riscrivendo la matematica o è solo un fenomenale allucinatore?

E se vi dicessi che il prossimo premio Fields potrebbe essere assegnato a un cluster di GPU in un data center della Silicon Valley? Sembra una di quelle gag da film sci-fi alla ‘Her’, ma quello che è successo recentemente tra Terrence Tao — sì, proprio lui, uno di quei cervelli che vedono pattern dove noi vediamo solo rumore bianco — e ChatGPT ha fatto saltare sulla sedia non solo la community accademica, ma anche tutti gli appassionati di deep learning. Il tema del contendere? La Congettura di Jacobian, un rompicapo di algebra complessa che spinge i limiti della nostra comprensione matematica. In pratica, Tao ha usato l’IA per esplorare l’idea di un possibile controesempio alla congettura. E qui sta il punto: non stiamo parlando di chiedere all’LLM come si scriva una funzione in Python o come si risolva un bug su un modulo kernel. Stiamo parlando di usare un modello probabilistico per navigare in territori di astrazione matematica così elevati che la maggior parte di noi si perderebbe anche solo cercando di leggere l’indice del libro. La conversazione condivisa rivela qualcosa di profondamente affascinante e, allo stesso tempo, inquietante. Da una parte, c’è l’entusiasmo puro: l’idea che l’IA possa agire come un ‘partner di brainstorming’ capace di connettere nodi logici che un umano, per quanto geniale, potrebbe impiegare anni a processare. È la pura potenza del calcolo applicata all’intuizione. Dall’altra parte, però, c’è il solito rischio che conosciamo bene: le allucinazioni. Gli LLM non ‘capiscono’ la matematica; calcolano la probabilità che un simbolo segua un altro. Quando Tao interroga il modello, si trova a navigare in un territorio dove il confine tra un’intuizione brillante e un errore logico grossolano è sottile come un filo di silicio. È un po’ come avere un assistente che ti propone idee rivoluzionarie, ma che ogni tanto giura che due più due fa cinque solo perché suona bene nel contesto della frase. Per noi che viviamo di codice e hardware, la questione è meno legata alla matematica pura e più alla natura stessa dello strumento. Stiamo costruendo una ‘scatola nera’ che può aiutarci a risolvere problemi insolubili, ma lo stiamo facendo senza avere il controllo totale sui processi logici che avvengono sotto il cofano. Non è una questione di fiducia cieca nel vendor, ma di comprensione del tool. Se l’IA può aiutarci a trovare un controesempio a una congettura decennale, allora il paradigma della ricerca è cambiato per sempre. Solo che, come sempre, la vera sfida non è quanto l’IA sia intelligente, ma quanto noi saremo capaci di validare ciò che ci propone senza farci fregare dal pattern più probabile. Wood Lathe - Bowl Turning (22 Jul 2026)

If you’ve ever admired wooden bowls and wondered how to make them, here is your opportunity! We will guide you step by step through the process of turning your own bowl on the lathe with traditional turning tools. You’ll learn about stock selection, chucking, how to turn, lathe safety, and different bowl finishes. The cost of the class includes instruction as well as the wood to make the bowl, sandpaper, and finish. At the end of the day, you’ll have a bowl to take home! Length of class depends on students abilities, and can vary from 2 to 4 hours. What Not to Wear: Do not wear any dangling jewelry or lanyards that can get caught in machinery. Do not wear clothing with loose sleeves or draped or dangling elements that can get caught in machinery No open toe shoes (anywhere in the facility) Long hair and beards must be securely tied back. Currently face masks are recommended but not required the facility. A cotton cloth mask with ties instead of ear loops must be well secured with no dangling tie ends. We will provide: Eye protection and face protection Ear plugs if requested Materials for class projects CANCELLATION, CHANGE, AND REFUND POLICY This is a high demand event with limited spaces available. Welding (beginners, refresher & safety) (22 Jul 2026)

Beginning Welding is a 3-session course; each session is 3 hours. Students will gain a core understanding of how to operate welding equipment safely and get familiar with basic techniques. This class is for hobbyists, makers, artists, or anyone wanting to try something new and challenge themselves a bit in a comfortable collaborative environment. Check the class times shown to ensure you can make it to every session. What Not to Wear: Do not wear rings or other jewelry. No open toe shoes (anywhere in the facility) Do not wear clothing made from synthetic or synthetic blends. The synthetic fabric can burn vigorously, melt and produce skin burns. Long hair and beards should be securely tied back. Currently face masks are recommended but not required in the facility. A cotton cloth mask is safest around open flame. Your instructor will explain the safe use of face masks around welding equipment. We will provide: Eye protection Face hood/shield Leathers Insulated gloves Ear plugs Materials for class projects Please bring any hoods/gloves/leathers if you have them Upon completion of the class, Ideaworks members may be certified to use the Weldatorium tools unsupervised during business hours.
