Speculative Energy Futures Workshops in Cape Town

🇨🇭 · GaudiLabs · Miranda Moss

Lalela, the LO-Def Film Factory and GaudiLabs teamed up to co-run a workshop where participants learned how to build their own solar-powered devices, and learners were invited to think beyond solar energy as just a technical solution. By using the LO-Def Film Factory method for speculative storytelling and character design, The workshop participants explored how energy, technology and power are experienced and shared in South Africa. They also imagined how these resources could be harnessed for more just collective futures. By combining imagination with practical skills, learners were able to connect creative thinking with real-world application, gaining both technical knowledge and new ways of understanding the world around them.

Zero Power Indicator; Open Hardware Research Project

🇨🇭 · GaudiLabs · Miranda Moss

We are happy to be supported by the Prototype Fund Switzerland in realising the Zero Power Indicator project. Open Data CH , through the Prototype Fund Switzerland, ”promotes innovative open-source projects that strengthen the common good”. We responded to their call for projects in sustainable digitization and digital sufficiency with a proposal to tackle a reimagining of the always-on indicator LED used in hardware interfaces, which have a surprisingly high cumulative energy usage and reinforce a culture of constant digital alertness. The project entailed investigating and prototyping with existing, appropriate technologies and to compare their suitability and replicability, focussing on electrophoresis, electromagnetism, electrochromism, and electrowetting.
