Moth by Shey Rivera IN THE AS220 GALLERIES August 9-30th, 2025 opening | Saturday August 2nd ,2025, 5-7pm AS220 MAIN GALLERY @115 Empire St All Ages Show a retrospective of Punk & Hardcore at AS220 (1991–2006) This exhibit is a raw glimpse into the energy, urgency, and spirit of punk and hardcore as it pulsed through AS220 from the early ’90s to the mid-2000s. Captured through the lenses of Justine DeMetrick, Chris Minicucci, and Emily West Langlais, these photographs document not just the bands, but the community that built and sustained a fiercely independent scene. Spanning local legends to international acts from Japan, Finland, Sweden, and across the U.S., these images bear witness to a time when DIY ethics, resistance, and sound collided in a sweaty room. Many of these photos—printed from decades-old negatives—have never been shown before. This retrospective honors the bands who played, the people who booked them, and the photographers who stood in the thick of it to capture fleeting moments of catharsis. It’s not about nostalgia—it’s about remembering what can happen when a space opens its doors to the uncompromising and the loud. Drawing inspiration from spirit animals, dreamscapes, and whimsical characters, I strive to create immersive worlds that evoke imagination, spirituality, and a sense of connection. Through a palette of bold, vibrant hues and playful compositions,which I use to draw inspiration from the colorful and eclectic influences of 80's and 90's culture. I aim to spread these colorful realms to the masses, inviting viewers into spaces where dreams come alive and spirits soar. My work is an invitation to embrace the magic within ourselves, celebrating the beauty of intuition, fantasy, and the endless possibilities of the imagination. With a keen eye for detail and a love for pop culture, I like to create pieces that transport viewers to a lively, dream-like world infused with the spirit that invokes. Video animations, audio stories, an altar, and visual landscapes fill this oasis. You are invited to come sit, rest, listen, and share. Window Installation: FERAL FRUIT, visual threads for AS220’s Foo Fest Shey Artist Statement: I am a queer Boricua interdisciplinary artist creating mejunje — or a mix of ritual-based performance, installation, animation, and photography — where magical realism and speculative fiction become portals to decolonial futures. My creative practice is rooted in my lived experience and the ancestral and political histories of Borikén (Puerto Rico), the archipelago where I was born and raised, as well as the international creative communities I am a part of. I use storytelling, drawing over photographs, writing, and site-specific ritual to create decolonial slipstreams of time, liberatory gathering spaces, and living archives of ancestral practice and future memory. My work confronts colonialism and U.S. imperialism while simultaneously generating sacred sites of queer joy, healing, and imagination. My performances and installations invites participants into a connective experience — not just to witness, but to connect and remember. This is my ancestral strength: a multi-faceted creative practice of world-making that weaves together myth, spirit, and resistance. RESIDENT GALLERY @131 Washington St. A Cold Place | Amanda Joy A multidisciplinary artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. A Cold Place is a combination of landscape paintings, field recordings, and illustrations inspired by six months working as a "Wastie" at Palmer Station, Antarctica. The exhibition serves as both a snapshot and an invitation to slow down. A meditation on presence, drawn from one of the most remote places on Earth.
