SMT for You and Me: MP3 player edition

Learn to surface mount solder by assembling a pocket-sized MP3 player! Work with the teeny-weeny electronic components of the future!Surface mount components! They’re hip, they’re tiny, and you’ve probably swallowed a couple accidentally by now. If you’re still using clunky, chunky through-hole components that you found in your grandparents’ butter cookie tin it’s time to get with the times and learn how to solder the teeny-weeny components of the future! (And frankly, they're not making the old ones anymore.)This time around we'll be assembling our own pocket-sized MP3 player, based on Raphael Abrams' classic Daisy MP3 design. We'll learn solder paste stenciling, reflow soldering, hand soldering, and rework and repair techniques-- stuff you can actually use. Bring some wired headphones with you and you can walk out the door listening to jams on a player you built yourself!No prior soldering or electronics experience is required for this class. You can do it!
To bring:
Ideally, bring a microSD card (smaller capacity cards, less than 512GB, are preferred) and wired headphones, but if you don't have either we'll work something out.
Your instructor:
Adam Mayer is a longtime NYCR member who burnt his finger on a soldering iron when he was ten and has never forgiven it. He has done questionable things with PCBs and hot plates. (Don't solder with hot plates.)

Your instructor:Lily Crandall is a Brooklyn-based educator, creative technologist, and fiber artist exploring new ways to facilitate connection and play through collaborative art-making, workshops, and yarn. She received her masters degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) and has taught workshops at New York Institute of Technology, The New School, Temple University, and Arizona State University. She is passionate about creating playful, accessible, educational, experiences and tools that bring people together.

We’re a group of DIYers who love fixing things! (And we’re also on Discord!)
Repair Cafe NYC organizes events where we collectively diagnose and fix broken objects, share skills, and build intergenerational, community-based knowledge. We’re interested in helping each other gain confidence in the act of repair to prevent our belongings from going to the landfill, and thinking critically about where our things come from.
People bring a wide variety of items to events, including lamps, chairs, mugs/plates, clothes and more. Think small, portable items (no large appliances, bicycles or couches).

In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, we will start with the class default and if there's extra time, a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Transform used bike chains into kinetic jewelry and small wearable objects with movement, memory, and a little bit of steel magic.In this hands-on workshop, we’ll transform used bike chains into kinetic jewelry and small wearable objects with movement, memory, and a little bit of steel magic.
Participants will learn how to clean, break down, and repurpose bike chain into pieces that can become a necklace, bracelet, keychain, gift, or small talisman. We’ll also explore heat painting steel, using flame and temperature to bring out shifting blues, golds, purples, and other iridescent tones in the metal.Kinetic jewelry offers a small source of movement, texture, and tactile stimulation, something to fidget with, focus on, or carry as a grounding object. Your finished piece might commemorate the bike you crossed the country with, hold the story of a beloved ride, or become a gift for someone who would rather skip the subway and bomb down Broadway on two wheels instead.
Participants are welcome to bring their own retired bike chain, especially one with personal meaning, or use materials provided in class. No prior jewelry-making or bike repair experience needed, just curiosity, hands, and a willingness to play with metal, motion, and memory.
Your instructor:
Adela Wagner is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist, community organizer, and long-distance cyclist whose work often lives at the intersection of movement, memory, and care. Their cycling life began in NYC on a rusted Craigslist bike and eventually carried them across six states on a solo ride from Pennsylvania to Georgia, through Czech mountain roads, and into mutual aid rides, street activism, and bike community. For Adela, the bicycle is both a practical tool and a vessel for story: a way to move through fear, build connection, carry grief, and find freedom in the flow state.

Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Please be ready to start at 1pm! We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you're interested, you may want to sign up early.

Get a sneak peek of work-in-progress sci-fi short Spoon-Fed. Your feedback will help shape the final cut of the film!Be part of the post-production process and support indie filmmaking. This is a pay-what-you-wish event. All proceeds will go toward completing the project.

About the Director:
Jaime Sunwoo (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist from New York City working in film, art, and animation. Her animated short documentary Equality Tea was featured in Vogue and Whetstone Magazine. Her film Handwritten premiered at Lincoln Center for New York Asian Film Festival and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in Fantastic New Worlds: A Handmade Puppet Dreams Collection. Her New York Times featured production Specially Processed American Me received support from BRIClab, NYC Women's Fund, The Jim Henson Foundation, Queens Council on the Arts, Asian Women Giving Circle, Brooklyn Arts Fund, and The Laundromat Project. Her short film Ommatidia, co-created with neuroscientist Sromana Mukherjee at NYU's Desplan Lab, premiered at the Science New Wave Festival and is streaming on Labocine. In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted - but we'll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!
An SVG vector file of a simple shape you'd like to cut for your first cut.A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you'd like to cut. If you can't bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site.Please be on time for the start of class! If you're late you will miss your slot.

Hal has a similar sense of humor and thinks a yoga class is best when students feel both deeply supported and challenged. We'll build a cassette loop and jam with reel-to-reel- and cassette-based echo systems. We'll show how to extend those techniques further with additional digital loopers and feedback systems.

Wir schauen entweder "Die Anstalt", oder "Fun Facts". Öffentlich, politisch, informativ, gemeinschaftlich und kostenlos. Verpflegung darf gerne beigetragen werden.

"Die Anstalt" im ZDF ist die altbekannte Polit-Satire Sendung, früher unter dem Namen "Neues aus der Anstalt". "Fun Facts" ist ein neues unabhängiges Format auf funfacts.de und beschreibt sich selbst so:

"Fakten haben es nicht leicht in den sozialen Medien. Da helfen wir nach. Fun Facts. […] Bekannte Faktenfans präsentieren humorvoll und konstruktiv, was wirklich wichtig ist […]. Die Hosts wechseln täglich, denn Fun Facts ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt.

Finger crochet is crochet without a traditional hook. We are the hook so in this class, you will learn to be a tool of the craft.Finger crochet is crochet without a traditional hook. We are the hook so in this class, you will learn to be a tool of the craft. in this class, students will be taught a finger-crochet method of a basic chain, how to start a new row, a beginner-friendly stitch with two modifications, and how to join two pieces together.

With these skills acquired, we will work together to make a foundational piece that can be worked into a scarf, headband or small bag or pouch. The class will be 2 hours though it is possible to complete the course in less time depending on what you're working on, how fast you catch on and how fast your hands move though this isn't a race and this craft is especially more of a meditative take your time practice.

This class is for anyone interested in learning how to finger-crochet. It is beginner friendly if you're new to fiber art but experience in crocheting with a hook will give some a familiarity with some aspects like what a chain in/looks like

The class is taught by NYC artist Lo. Lo is a New York City–based artist whose creative practice spans many disciplines, from singing to crochet. Working with her hands has been a lifelong passion, rooted in her upbringing in South Carolina, where she learned to braid hair alongside her mother and grandmother. That foundation naturally evolved into fiber arts, leading her to explore finger-knitting for several years and, more recently, finger-crochet. Along the way, she also spent time needle-knitting and briefly practiced traditional hook crochet. Since beginning her finger-crochet journey in March, Lo has developed a deep connection to the craft and finds joy in sharing her work and creative process with others.

This is a MASK REQUIRED event.
