In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted - but we'll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!
An SVG vector file of a simple shape you'd like to cut for your first cut. A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you'd like to cut. If you can't bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site.Please be on time for the start of class! If you're late you will miss your slot.

🎨 Join this class to learn how to make your own designs and use a plotter to put them on paper!
Join this hands-on session to:
✍️ Create stunning vector designs.🤖 Learn the skill of using plotters to bring your designs to life.Unlock your artistic potential and learn how to design vectors, then watch as a robot draws them using pens and markers. With this newfound knowledge, you can craft eye-catching posters, stickers, and more.
Vector designs are the cornerstone of various production projects, from stickers, posters, flyers, to banners, embroidery, and printed clothing. These designs are indispensable when working with tools like plotters, laser cutters, and CNC machines.
During the workshop, we'll introduce common drawing tools, make vector art, and then you'll get to utilize our AxiDraw plotters at NYC Resistor to make personalized postcards or flyers adorned with your unique artwork. The AxiDraw plotters will be available for your use later on our Open Craft Nights.
Supplies: All the necessary supplies will be provided. You're welcome to bring your laptop, and we can also lend you one. Any vector design application can be used during the class, with Inkscape being highly recommended due to its user-friendliness and being free (https://inkscape.org/).
🎯 Goals
By the end of this class, you'll have the skills to create any vector-based design you desire. This newfound expertise will empower you to collaborate with print shops for your artistic visions or return to our space and utilize our various tools that work seamlessly with vectors.
👩‍🏫 Who's Teaching?
Gene is an NYC Resistor member, whose passion for vector plots has lead him to both upgrade our AxiDraw v3 with custom hardware, and retrofit the ShotBot for large scale plots. His interest in ethical street art intersects with his plotting experiments.
This workshop is masks required. Masks are provided to anyone who needs one.

Just show up sometime between 4:00-6:00 pm and bring at least two items of clothing you don't want if you are able. They should still be fit to wear, but maybe not exciting to you anymore, or not your size right now. All genders, sizes, shapes, and styles are welcome! Any items of clothing that are left over will be donated or fabric-recycled.
In true NYCR hacker fashion, we will also be happy to talk about ways to alter and improve store-bought clothes. We'll have two sewing machines out if you want to work on an alteration right here.
Come join us and gift yourself some free fashion!

The purpose of this group is to take the increasingly impressive technical results coming out of AGI and share, contextualize and explore.The event:
this is an artificial general intelligence work group. the reason the term agi has been chosen over, say, machine learning, or artificial intelligence, or generative ai is because those terms have become more to do with the industrial use cases of certain human capacities rather than to do with the exploration of how information and knowledge are navigated by minds. the topics of machine learning and neural networks are still crucial. in fact, the purpose of this group as far as there is one is to take the increasingly impressive technical results coming out of those fields and contextualize them within social, aesthetic, psychological, economic, etc, paradigms we find ourselves within.
if you have found yourself drawn to the ideas that are expressed in books like /godel escher bach/, /the machinic unconscious/, /the lathe of heaven/, /the dispossessed/, /metaphors we live by/, /the c programming language/, and/or the nsa/ncsc rainbow series, show up. if you find yourself in awe of 256 byte demos, neural annealing, the edges of perception, or/and langsec, come by.
bring a piece of text you find interesting, bring a song, bring some code, bring some funny little puzzles, bring questions and maybe someone else will have brought an answer. this intends to be a collective conversation and action.

In the tradition of NYC Resistor's early Microcontroller Study Group, we are happy to provide our hacker space for meeting to explore emerging technology.
Who is the group for?
this group is for anyone interested in both deep diving on the newest technical advances and the wildest implications of those new technical developments. come with a willingness to share your perspective and your work in whatever form of expression it might take. if you use machine learning in your art, come. if you work on ASIC accelerators come. if you are obsessed with experience itself, come. if you care about people and their relationship to each other and the tools they use, show up!
The suggested donation of $15-20 will both be put towards drinks (Club Mate), and support the space.

Learn how to mend stained shirts, torn trousers, and holey socks by hand, using bright contrasting thread to celebrate the garment's story.Learn how to mend stained shirts, torn trousers, and holey socks by hand. From saving the world to just saving money, sustaining your wardrobe comes with the double benefit of slow observation over time. In this class we will use sewing methods such as patches, darning, and dazzle camouflage to fix our stuff. We will use bright contrasting thread to celebrate everyone who made the item, the times and ways you have used the item, and the people before and around us who also sew.
This class is for people who have never threaded a needle, and people whose pants are entirely patch. Please bring a leather or fabric item/garment to repair.
This is a masks required workshop. Snacks and a beverage will be provided. Attendees are required to wear a face mask that covers their mouth and nose when not snacking.
Your instructor:
Robin taught themself to sew by repairing their clothes as a teenager. For over ten years they’ve repaired clothes on commission and to maintain their wardrobe. Robin prefers visible mending in most circumstances, and is delighted to pass the knowledge to others.
There are up to 4 sliding scale tickets available for those who need that option to participate.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Stitch This: Basics of Hand Embroidery

Participants will learn how to outline a shape with the split stitch, fill it with the satin stitch, and decorate it with the lazy daisy.Stitch This: Basics of Hand Embroidery is an interactive, beginner-friendly workshop where participants will learn three basic hand embroidery stitches: the split stitch, satin stitch, and lazy daisy stitch. This will be a hybrid workshop with ten in-person spots and five virtual spots.
A simple shape (flower, triangle, circle) will be drawn onto the fabric, pre-loaded onto an embroidery hoop (online participants will receive instructions on how to do this at home prior to class). Participants will learn how to outline the shape with the split stitch, fill it with the satin stitch, and decorate it with the lazy daisy. With these three simple stitches, the world of hand embroidery is yours! You will be amazed at how many embroidery projects are possible with the tools you’ll learn.
*Note: In-person participants will be provided with supplies and virtual participants will be provided with a list of supplies to get before the class.
This is a masks required class. Minimum KN94 or KN95 with extras on hand if needed.
Instructor Bio:
Anna Zagerson is an occupational therapist, creative writing graduate student, and lifelong crafter. Her interests include collage making, embroidery, beadwork, pyrography, thrifting, writing speculative fiction, Soviet culture, accessibility advocacy, and animal rescue. When she isn’t dreaming of becoming the neighborhood herb witch, she’s binging 90s shows with her rescue cat, Wolfie.
