Hi All,
As you know, we're still not in a position to open up the space at RoPR for general access (we're missing crucial stuff like walls and access control we'd need for that)

But things have progressed to the point we can open the space for members to come to use it during time-limited slots when our responsible key-holder for the building, @liyang has (foolishly) volunteered to come in and supervise. We're planning to run the first of these next Wednesday!

We've managed to set up temporary workstations for 3D printing, electronics, textiles and light-duty woodworking/ general tinkering (thanks to all those who've been to help set those up over the last few days)- it's not much for now, but something we can build from.

So if you want to come work on a personal project (that's suitable for the limited facilities on offer), help us develop this temporary space, or just come chat with fellow members - we'll see you there.

Grab the Guts!: Salvaging Electronic Parts from Street Trash

Vaccination Proof + Mask + RSVP Required

Every trash day you stroll past discarded robots! Learn their stories, rescue their organs and use them to power the machines of tomorrow.Your neighborhood is awash in discarded robots! Every time trash day rolls around, you've no doubt strolled past a dozen printers, televisions, toasters, or other sophisticated electronic devices that have been dumped on the sidewalk and left for dead. Each one of them has a story to tell, and parts to offer. Wouldn't it be nice to learn those stories, and rescue their organs to power the machines of tomorrow?

During this class we'll be taking apart several inkjet printers we've rescued from the cold, bitter streets of Brooklyn to find out what makes them tick and to save the parts that we can use to make other things tick. Along the way we'll learn a bit about manufacturing, design, and why things are built the way they are. When we're done, we'll hopefully have a bountiful harvest of buttons, motors, gears, sensors, screens and other useful bits that you can use in your own projects!

This class with be taught by Adam Mayer. Adam is a longtime NYCR member who has been disassembling and resurrecting old equipment for a decade and a half. He has a stack of inkjet printers in his home that is as tall as he is.

As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

Please note that refunds must be requested 72 hours in advance. If you have any questions, please email classes@nycresistor.com.

Start creating beautiful interactive, and immersive generative media by learning the underlying logic and workflows of the program.TouchDesigner is a real time generative graphics application that can be used for anything from generating graphics using dynamic noise data in real-time to audio-responsive 3D geometry. We’ll go through multiple examples of how to start creating beautiful generative content in TouchDesigner. Interactive, immersive, generative media is the reason you’re investing in learning TouchDesigner, and this class helps you get started creating it right away!
In the class we will discuss the fundamentals of the TouchDesigner. If you have never used a node-based programming environment before, this class is for you. I walk you through the basics of TouchDesigner logic and workflows, explaining exactly what nodes and wires are and how they work. This includes a walk through of the basic settings and preferences you can leverage in TouchDesigner that set you up for success and make your life easier.
We will learn about all six of the operator families used by TouchDesigner, and how they integrate with the TouchDesigner workflow. I’ll walk you through an example project for each of them.
Instructor :Bio
Woody Poulard (aka GRNCH) is a Brooklyn-based artist/musician whose work focuses on generative audio-reactive visual installations and performances. He uses creative coding applications like TouchDesigner to generate real-time visuals, Blender for 3D design, and Ableton for music production. Trained in both audio and mechanical engineering, Woody also makes physical sculptures using digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. GRNCH’s visuals use elements of abstract, futuristic, and hypnotic scenery, often paired with his signature sound: dark, cinematic, suspenseful techno and broken beat.

Vaccination Proof + Mask + RSVP Required
RSVP https://www.eventbrite.com/e/build-a-home-network-intrusion-detection-system-with-suricata-tickets-667096171607

Learn fundamentals of intrusion detection systems (IDS) for network logging, analysis, alerting, and detection. Protect your data & devices. Each day brings fresh news of more networks being breached as the number of devices connected to the internet continues apace. Fortunately, individuals and organizations have the power to take security into their own hands and use open source technology to protect their data and devices from intruders.
Join this class to learn the fundamentals about intrusion detection systems (IDS). These systems are a core component of contemporary network security. We will focus on Suricata — a popular free and open source tool that enables network logging, analysis, alerting, and detection. This is a perfect way to understand what’s happening inside our network and how anomalies can be detected. Everyone who attends will leave with the knowledge to set up monitoring for your own network, start to generate some informative alerts, and take it further to support your own goals.
This is a hybrid event, and online participation will be via Zoom.
Your Instructor:
Luke has extensive experience as a security researcher and intelligence analyst, and has worked in cybersecurity for almost a decade. He holds a CISSP certification. His work on cyber security risks, investigations, and threat intelligence help inform his understanding of contemporary network security.
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is 18+ and governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct, as well as accessibility information, can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.

Flame Effects Basics - A Talk About Propane and Propane Accessories

Jul 19 11:00 PM - Jul 20 12:30 AM

🇺🇸 · NYC Resistor

Vaccination Proof + Mask + RSVP Required
RSVP https://www.eventbrite.com/e/flame-effects-basics-a-talk-about-propane-and-propane-accessories-tickets-667952553067

This talk will address not only programmatic 12V solenoid control and fun flame test color techniques, but also the relevant safety codes.Interactive flame effects are the fanciest blinking lights available. Typically made of propane fittings and 12V solenoid controls, flame effects are a lot of fun and can also be quite risky. They have a lot in common with other 12V projects, like bar bots, but thanks to the risk of being a truly, dangerously unique audience experience, they operate under much more stringent safety restrictions than comparable systems. This talk will address not only programmatic 12V solenoid control and fun flame test color techniques, but also the safety code known as the NFPA-160, which helps protect audiences while they’re having fun.
Come on out! We’ll chat about some fun basic projects, some really advanced ones, permits that are required to handle this type of effect, and how to achieve a different fire colour than “orange” in your effects. There will be technical details! If nothing else, you will learn how to check for gas leaks in your house!
Our speaker:
Alex Leitch is an interactive technologist from Toronto, Canada. They helped to bring flame effects to several Burning Man related events circa 2010, and have continued working on systems for selective, portable effect color since. Alex spends a lot of time thinking about how to make technical processes accessible to new audiences, and how interaction interfaces work with experience design. They are also the co-director of the Human-Computer Interaction M.S. at the University of Maryland, College Park, where they are working on their PhD in information studies.
