What to do when you break something

We’ve had a few members approach leaders at the makerspace lately to say, “I just broke a machine! What should I do!?” This topic is covered in safety classes but we wanted to reiterate some best practices.

Here are some things you should NOT do:

  1. Have no idea what to do
  2. Leave without doing anything
  3. Blank stare for extended period of time

Here are some things you SHOULD do:

  1. Turn it off.
  2. Unplug it.
  3. Gather information. Examine the situation as best you can. What’s damaged? Will new parts be…

NOMCON 2018

This post was contributed by LaDeana Dockery

We met a lot of great people and had a lot of fun going to the 2018 Nation of Makers Conference (NOMCON).

Most of us (David, Malissa, Logan and myself) set out Friday morning… well Thursday night really.  It is 2:30am when the train leaves Newton, Kansas heading West.  If you have never taken the train, you should at least take one trip.  We watched the scenery from Western Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico fly by from the Observation car as we…

Testing LED strip

Many people do not realise how much heat is generated by modern high brightness LEDs. An old-fashioned 100W incandescent light bulb produces around 5% visible light, 83% infrared radiation and 12% heat. An equivalently bright LED bulb might produce 30% visible light and 70% heat. Although the total power consumption is much less (around 17W for the LED), the amount of heat which must be dissipated at the source is almost the same (12% of 100W is 12W, 70% of 17W is 11.9W), and LEDs are easily…

The Mayor visits the shed.

Last wednesday we had the mayor visit the shed to have a look around. The visit was also documented by MK Citizen and made the front page of the paper edition.

They were impressed by the 3D printers we had built and Paul designed a key ring with the Mayors name on it for him to take away. Here’s a couple of picture:
