Shop closure update: 4/12/2020

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all healthy and safe. Here’s an update on how things are going for Twin Cities Maker, and what the board is doing at this time to keep our organization going.

Shop remains closed past Monday 4/13…

Unfortunately, given the governor’s extension of the stay-at-home order, the shop will remain closed for the time being.

…But we’re looking at options for reopening

The board will be discussing our options for reopening at our next meeting on Tuesday 4/14. The Minnesota…

3D Printed Face Shields

Members of the Midsouth Makers are answering the call to 3D print protective equipment for those on the frontline of the COVID19 pandemic.

The Memphis tech community is mass producing PPE using the laser cutters available at Midsouth Makers and their personal 3D printers. The first batch of nearly 500 face shields were delivered to the Memphis Medical Society for distribution to local healthcare workers. 3D printed faces certainly look amazing, but it would be even more incredible to have…

In the quarantine bunker: Days 1-3

Hello, world! I’m a clone, and right now I’m being tested for SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. I’ve heard some of you are interested in what happens after you take the test. In brief ,the test is a mouth swab and a lot of waiting. I’m afraid you’ll have to go elsewhere to hear about the mouth swab. I’ll tell you about the waiting.

Most of my time is simply spent sitting alone, playing games like 제왕카지노, and thinking. For me that isn’t much of a change from normal. I’m usually…

Environmental monitoring added to the space.

We now have air quality (PM2.5 & PM10), temperature, humidity and pressure monitoring at the shed. There’s an SDS011 and a BME280 sensor connected to an ESP8266 upstairs in the corner near the printer. Readings are taken every 5 minutes and uploaded to an influxdb server which grafana is pulling it’s data from to produce these neat graphs available here:

https://data.mkmakerspace.co.uk/

The plan is to extend this and have outdoor monitoring as well as other interesting data points…

COLA Statement in Solidarity

Endorsed by Cloyne Council on 3/8/2020, 36 in favor, 0 opposed, 1 abstaining

To Chancellor Christ and UC Board of Regents,

Several months ago, graduate students at UC Santa Cruz and across the UC system began making demands for a COLA (cost of living adjustment). As students of UC Berkeley and members of Cloyne Court (a Berkeley Student Cooperative house), we write this letter in collective solidarity with all graduate students fighting for a living wage adjustment. In an area in which…

Making a kindle case from leather scraps and superglue

I wanted a cover for my kindle and had been pondering it for a while drawing up some ideas of more and more elaborate cases with various pockets. Then I decided to try and focus a bit and reduce the case to the bare basics. I like to have a notepad with me when I read as I tend to get in a thinking mood quite often when I have been reading so it’s nice to have somewhere to get those thoughts out of my head. I had a few of these little notebooks that seemed to be just a little bit bigger than…

Roller shutter cabinet built on the laser cutter.

For some time now I have wanted to make a roller top desk. These are normally made by cutting a plank of wood intro strips and sticking them to a piece of cloth backing to allow it to flex. This wobbly sheet is then held in a captive groove at either side allowing it to roll when pushed from one side. This creates a curved cover that rolls away in a satisfying manner. My first thought was to cut a single sheet of A4 ply into strips using the laser cutter and then follow the classic design but…
