This 4-hour whittling class will teach students how to use a wood carving blade to shape a piece of basswood into a handheld figurine. Each step teaches a different type of cut and how to make that cut, skills building one on top of the others to create a full understanding of whittling.

In bookbinding, you find yourself cutting lots of things – paper, board, cloth, leather – and it helps to be able to cut straight and square. If you ask a dozen bookbinders how they do it, you will probably get a dozen different answers. DAS Bookbinding has a method I like, using a bench hook that has a straightedge against which perpendicular cuts can be made.

In July, I attended a bookbinding workshop at Nova Community Arts. It was a two-part class, during which each student created their own hardcover book.

Nova Community Arts is a community studio in Atwater Village. They have classes and workshops on the Risograph, screen printing, an bookbinding. Once you have taken a class (like on the Riso or screen printing), you can rent studio time to use the tools you’ve learned to use.
