How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:

Repair Cafe is a casual hangout where people come together to diagnose and repair broken things from their life. This time at NYC Resistor.epair can be intimidating if you haven’t done it before, and the hardest part often is getting started. It’s easier with other people to get you over that hump, and that’s where Repair Cafe NYC comes in!
We’re a group of DIYers who love fixing things!
Repair Cafe NYC organizes events where we collectively diagnose and fix broken objects, share skills, and build intergenerational, community-based knowledge. We’re interested in helping each other gain confidence in the act of repair to prevent our belongings from going to the landfill, and thinking critically about where our things come from.
People bring a wide variety of items to events, including lamps, chairs, mugs/plates, clothes and more. Think small, portable items (no large appliances, bicycles or couches).

In this class you will learn to crochet a cupcake. All materials AND ACTUAL EDIBLE CUPCAKES will be provided!Come to Resistor to learn the basics of crochet! In this class you will learn to crochet a tiny (non-edible) cupcake applique made of yarn. The pattern will teach you the basics of crochet, namely how to make chain stitches and single stitches. It will be taught by Cat Paris, an NYC based educator and crochet aficionado. All materials will be provided! There will also be ACTUAL EDIBLE CUPCAKES that you can snack on while you work on your craft!
No experience is necessary and the participants do not need to bring anything aside from their hands!
This is a masks optional event.

Sliding Scale 1 ticket price fully covers all supplies, snacks, teacher and space compensation. Sliding Scales 2 & 3 are to help make the class more accessible for people who need a discount to participate.

We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Hal has been practicing yoga since they were a teenager. Their first yoga teacher used to come around the room and cheerfully say the class would be in the pose for a week to 10 days. Hal has a similar sense of humor and thinks a yoga class is best when students feel both deeply supported and challenged. Hal is a software dev who appreciates a good bug and is a 200-hr certified yoga teacher. More info:

In this class you will make a design, carve it onto a 6x4 block of linoleum and make your own print with the help of Cat Paris, an NYC based educator and linocut artist. All materials will be provided! There will also be snacks and a raffle!No experience is necessary and the participants do not need to bring anything!Cat started making Linocut prints in high school and started making them again in 2024.

Froth: Experimental programming language for talking with little computers

Froth is a (weird!) modern take on a 70s programming language. Be an early user by programming a game on a custom breakout board.Working with microcontrollers doesn't have to be slow or clunky. Froth is a new (and weird!) experimental programming language being developed at NYU's ITP. Based on one of the first interactive programming languages of the 70’s, Froth is a modern take on a stack-based, interpreted embedded language.In this workshop, we'll start with a bit of esoteric computer language history and then do a whirlwind tour of Froth's syntax. Once we've warmed up, we'll get a feel for what a truly discursive and device-first language feels like, by using Froth to interactively program a game on a custom breakout board with an LED array, buttons, and encoders.You will be amongst the first ever users of Froth. If you enjoy strange or nostalgic computation, mind-benders, and thinking about how we relate to the devices around us, this workshop is for you.
In order to really enjoy this workshop, you would benefit from:
Having some familiarity with programming microcontrollers. Arduino is fine.Knowing the basics of how a microcontroller works (it has pins, what serial means, etc.).Having a good grasp on programming fundamentals (you've worked in C, Python, JS, etc. before).Technical reqs (or, what laptop to bring along):
Froth has a plugin for VSCode we will be using, which will make your life significantly easier. VSCode is highly suggested.Froth is being developed in MacOS. Therefore, Macs (hopefully up to date), are ideal.If you work with Linux or another Posix-like system, please message me and I can work with you to make sure the system is compatible with your unit.Unfortunately, Windows is not supported at the moment.This is a masks optional workshop.

In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. Learn how to take a digital image and add it to shirts, mugs, bookmarks, magnets and more. Perfect for custom swag and gifts.Sublimation Transfer is the process of using a special ink that can be transferred from paper onto objects such as shirts, caps, mugs, bookmarks, magnets and more! This opens up the possibility of taking any digital picture and adding it on to swag to make your own customized gifts and apparel.
In this class, we will go over how sublimation transfer works as well as some other alternative methods used for transferring digital images onto physical objects. We’ll go over key differences and pros and cons of each. Then we’ll have our hands-on part of the class where we will use the printer to prepare our digital images for transfer, followed by using the heat press safely to transfer the images you bring to an object of your choice. No previous experience is required!
Please be ready to start at 1pm! We find that you will need this time to get through the whole class. Our classes tend to sell out about a week in advance so if you're interested, you may want to sign up early.

Learn how to turn your own fabric into a touch sensor you can use to control electronic components of costumes and textile art!Have you ever wanted to include controllable electronic components in your costumes, knitting or other textile projects? Have you ever wanted to add a textile element to your microcontroller project? Add capacitive touch sensing to your toolbox! In this class you'll learn:
how make your own conductive polymer as a dye bathhow to turn your electro-reactive textile into a sensor that can detect your touchhow to connect that textile sensor to a microcontrollerhow to use that sensor to produce different effects like turning electronic components on and off, creating effects over time, and even sense proximity beyond direct touch.No electronics, programming, or textiles experience is required for this class at all! We'll walk you through everything you need to know to create your textile sensor, wire it up, and program an Arduino-compatible microcontroller to create lighting effects on addressable LEDs.
All materials are included in the class, but you will need to bring your own laptop, and can optionally bring your absorbant textile swatch to dye (8" x 8" for fabrics, a small amount of yarn, a piece of natural sponge, etc.). Natural fibers typically take the process the best.
This class will be taught by Resistor members Kari Love and Katie Mills. Using techniques from the PolySense project.
There are 2 spots reserved for students who cannot access the class at the full price, so please make use of one of these need-based tickets if that is your situation.
