In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted - but we'll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!

Hardware Reincarnation: Vape Synthesizers Workshop

Come to this small group workshop to turn discarded electronic vapes into small synthesizers and learn about global repair culture.In this workshop participants will build simple audio synthesizers using recycled disposable vapes. Participants will leave with an understanding of disassembling vapes for parts and constructing an analog noise making circuit. Together we will review the necessary circuitry, and make breadboard variants inspired by the work of Forrest Mims in his "Timers Op-Amp's and Optoelectronic Circuit.
We'll also discuss opportunities for further experimentation and creative adaptations for both vape components and synths inspired by global traditions of resourceful making including gambiarra (Brazil), jugaad (India), Shanzhai and Lajilao (China), and shared ethos with community-based workshops like:
NYC Resistor's "Grab the Guts: Salvaging Electronic Parts from Street Trash" and "Use Those Guts: Building from Salvaged Components" seriesDisengineering Society's "Vape Mic" workshop, where disposable vapes are salvaged and repurposed into functional microphonesNo experience necessary. Participants will be provided vapes and all necessary electronics.

Anyone curious about transforming discarded electronics into creative toolsArtists and technologists working with electronics and soundDesigners and makers interested in sustainable practices and material reuseResearchers exploring alternative design methodologiesAbout the Instructors: shuang cai, Kari Love, and David Rios, are all New York City-based creators working together as Paper Bag Team. They make projects that blend applied technology, art, and craft, while evoking a sense of fun and surprise. They met working at NYU ITP and began collaborating on an overlapping interest in making salvage parts more accessible to use and educating folks about how disposable vapes became an outsized source of e-waste. They gave a talk about the Vape Synth at Open Hardware Summit 2024.
This is a masks optional event.

Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

In this beginner-friendly musical hardware hacking workshop, participants building their very own TOUCH SENSITIVE DISTORTION AMPLIFIERIn this beginner-friendly musical hardware hacking workshop, participants will be guided through building their very own TOUCH SENSITIVE DISTORTION AMPLIFIER.
They will start by salvaging a speaker cone from a piece of discarded e-waste, and then will learn about connecting it to a simple audio amplifier circuit, known as the LM386. Once the speaker and amplifier are connected and powered, participants will solder the whole thing together and, using cardboard, construct a unique speaker housing that allows the circuit to be touched by human fingers.
When the circuit is touched, at two points, by human fingers, it causes it to overdrive, essentially "shorting" it. This effect comes through as some of the most insanely dirty distortion you've ever heard and it's amazing.NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE NEEDEDWho is this class for?For anyone who wants to amplify sound in a new and creative way.
No prior experience/knowledge needed.

In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and de-soldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations. No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

Monthly Amateur Radio club meeting of NYCResistorRadio curious? Join the NYC Resistor Ham Radio Club (call sign N2YCR) for our open and regular meetings, the 4th Wednesday of each month from 8:00 – 9:30 pm at NYC Resistor (87 3rd Avenue, 4th Floor).
The amateur radio hobby has something for everyone, from Morse code to modern digital modes. Bring projects you're working on, gear to fix, problems that puzzle you, outings you'd like to organize, or just yourself to meet &amp; greet your friendly local hams. Drop by the #n2ycr channel in Discord any time to say hi.
You do not need to be a member of Resistor to be a member of the club, nor do you need to be a licensed amateur radio operator (though of course we hope you'll become licensed with our help).

Hal has been practicing yoga since they were a teenager. Their first yoga teacher used to come around the room and cheerfully say the class would be in the pose for a week to 10 days. Hal has a similar sense of humor and thinks a yoga class is best when students feel both deeply supported and challenged. Intro to TouchDesigner

Start creating beautiful interactive, and immersive generative media by learning the underlying logic and workflows of the program.TouchDesigner is a real time generative graphics application that can be used for anything from generating graphics using dynamic noise data in real-time to audio-responsive 3D geometry. We’ll go through multiple examples of how to start creating beautiful generative content in TouchDesigner. Interactive, immersive, generative media is the reason you’re investing in learning TouchDesigner, and this class helps you get started creating it right away!
In the class we will discuss the fundamentals of the TouchDesigner. If you have never used a node-based programming environment before, this class is for you. I walk you through the basics of TouchDesigner logic and workflows, explaining exactly what nodes and wires are and how they work. This includes a walk through of the basic settings and preferences you can leverage in TouchDesigner that set you up for success and make your life easier.
We will learn about all six of the operator families used by TouchDesigner, and how they integrate with the TouchDesigner workflow. I’ll walk you through an example project for each of them.

Woody Poulard (aka GRNCH) is a Brooklyn-based artist/musician whose work focuses on generative audio-reactive visual installations and performances. He uses creative coding applications like TouchDesigner to generate real-time visuals, Blender for 3D design, and Ableton for music production. Trained in both audio and mechanical engineering, Woody also makes physical sculptures using digital fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing. GRNCH’s visuals use elements of abstract, futuristic, and hypnotic scenery, often paired with his signature sound: dark, cinematic, suspenseful techno and broken beat.
