As you know, we're still not in a position to open up the space at RoPR for general access (we're missing crucial stuff like walls and access control we'd need for that)

We've managed to set up temporary workstations for 3D printing, electronics, textiles and light-duty woodworking/ general tinkering (thanks to all those who've been to help set those up over the last few days)- it's not much for now, but something we can build from.

So if you want to come work on a personal project (that's suitable for the limited facilities on offer), help us develop this temporary space, or just come chat with fellow members - we'll see you there.

Learn an operating system that lets you keep a secret online identity in a USB drive to keep your daytime and internet identities separate.In this hands-on workshop, we’ll cover an introduction to using Tails, an operating system that will let you keep a secret online identity in a USB drive. Aside from its worst-case-scenario-protection security design, Tails routes all internet traffic through Tor, a global anonymity network, which allows anyone to use the internet without correlating what you do on the internet to your daytime identity. We'll be setting up Tails USB drives, encrypted/persistent storage, as well as some of the general operational security practices around that.
USB drives will be provided but you'll need to bring an Intel-based Mac (No M1/M2 Macs) or PC (no Chromebooks) to run Tails.
This class will be taught by NYC Resistor member David Huerta. David is a Digital Security Trainer at Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), where he trains journalists in privacy-enhancing technology to circumvent national firewalls and empower a free press. When he's not writing, he's reading security vulnerability disclosures and not-so-silently judging the technologies affected.

Introduction to hand tool woodworking, wood science, and cutting board building. At the end you'll have an original cutting boardIntroduction to hand tool woodworking, wood science, and cutting board building. The class is open to complete beginners interested in getting their first hands-on experience and learning some woodworking fundamentals. In this class you will practice basics like panel glue-ups, handplaning wood flat and square, sanding, and finishing. You will get hands-on guidance in a small environment (2-4 students) and leave with a premium-quality cutting board made of cherry and maple of your own design. The board is planned to be approximately 12” x 18” and at least 1.25” thick. Keep it for yourself or give it as a gift!
To make the most of the glue-drying time, we will discuss the trials and tribulations of wood as a natural material and the crafty solutions woodworkers use to build beautiful things with it.
Masks are optional but highly encouraged for sanding.

I'm Alex P and I'm excited to bring some mondo cool woodworking to Resistor! I've spent the last 3 years absorbing everything I can about putting tools to wood and stumbling my way to becoming a better furniture maker. I hope to make Resistor my new home to learn, share, and build some beautiful projects. Bill says: “Alex is also the world record holder at Black Emperor, and brings major New Yankee Workshop vibes to Resistor's great good fortune.”

In this three hour class, you will learn:
How to set up a file for cutting on the laser cutter in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.Laser cutter safety including materials testing.Laser cutter operation including configuration, cuts and raster etching in common materials like wood, acrylic, cardboard and others.At the end of class, you will go home with:
One laser cut project, either the class default or a simple one of your own design (see below for details)Resistor Laser Certification, enabling you to use our laser on Craft Nights.Please bring the following to class:
A laptop with either Inkscape (free: download here: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.2.1/) or Adobe Illustrator installed.
A USB jump drive
The following items are optional if you'd like to try cutting a simple custom design. If your file ends up being too complicated, we may have you do the class default project first, just to learn the laser in the time allotted - but we'll definitely help you with your more complex cut at a free Craft Night in future!
An SVG vector file of a simple shape you'd like to cut for your first cut. A piece of 1/8 inch or thinner wood, acrylic or cardboard you'd like to cut. If you can't bring your own material, small pieces will be made available, or larger pieces for purchase on site.Please be on time for the start of class! If you're late you will miss your slot.

You instructors:
Dan Gorelick is a musician, creative technologist, and organizer who is based in the Bay Area and has a presence in Brooklyn and Berlin. He creates live audiovisual performances, blending his classical cello experience with the practice of live-coding: creating music with code. He is a co-founder of the Bay Area live audio-visual collective AV Club as well as Club Code, a non-location-specific collection of artists focusing on live-coding performance. He is also an organizer and member of the LivecodeNYC and TopLap Berlin collectives. His workshops explore live-coding as well as the creative possibilities when using technology to create music.
Viola He (sandpills) is a Shanghai-born, Brooklyn-based artist, educator, and cultural organizer. Their creative practices engage with DIY electronics, programming, movements, and time-based media. Using algorithmic approaches to enhance, alternate, and obfuscate sounds and images, they work to explore pathways towards alternative structures, systems and interfaces. Viola often dreams about clowning, computational humor, and infiltrating digital spaces with physical bodies as tools for intervention.
