Learn to sew in this online, pay-what-you-can class. We'll cover sewing machine basics and make a simple wallet.
This is an online sewing class aimed at beginners. Got a sewing machine and not sure how to use it? Want to get started making your own quilts, clothes, bags, or face masks? Let's get started with sewing!
This class will cover sewing machine basics: how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, and sew basic stitches. We'll also discuss seam allowances, hemming, and topstitching as you make and assemble your very own wallet.
These online classes are limited to a small number of students, so that we have ample time to devote to each person.
Because this is an online class, students will need to supply their own materials:
Sewing machineThreadSewing needleTwo quarter-yard pieces of woven cotton fabric, such as quilting cotton (at least 11" x 18"). These are often sold as "fat quarters". If you don't have any fabric at home, we suggest ordering two quarter-yards from a local fabric shop. We love Brooklyn General Store and Harts Fabric.ScissorsPen / chalk / other marking material.Ruler or measuring tapeStudents should purchase, download, and print the Wallet Sewing Pattern ahead of time. (If you don't have a printer, that's OK; the pattern pieces are simple enough to copy with a ruler.)Working phone or laptop with camera, for dialing into the video call (we'll be using Zoom). If you don't have a camera, that's OK too, but we won't be able to help troubleshoot if we can't see you! This class will be taught by NYC Resistor member Bonnie Eisenman. You can see examples of her sewing projects on Instagram!
As with all NYC Resistor events, this class is governed by our Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct can be found at www.nycresistor.com/participate/.
The suggested price for this class is $50.
