Soldering is one of the most important skills you'll need for working with electronics. Come join us for an introductory through-hole soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electrical components.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice with both soldering and desoldering techniques. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations.

No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering! All materials will be provided.

This class will be taught by Resistor members Astrida Valigorsky and Toma Morris.

Cut and Etch Your Own Designs with Our Laser Cutter

These classes fill up, reserve your spot now!
Harness the power of an Eplilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, we'll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the "go" button on the laser. We'll cover safety, basic file preparation, and learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you'll have made a plaque for your door, a keychain, a simple box or something slightly ambitious. (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 32" x 20" so buy materials accordingly. Keep in mind that large-scale, complex, multi-cut projects may not be appropriate for the class. Our goal is to teach you how to use the tool, not how to reinvent the Sistine Chapel in one afternoon.

Please bring a laptop and a USB jump drive. You may choose to upload and install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Monday or Thursday Craft Nights. (See our website for more info.)

Anthropomorphic Mice: Taxidermy 101!

In this introduction to taxidermy, you'll go from having a frozen 'feeder' mouse to a completely finished taxidermy mount. Go easy on the coffee if it makes your hands jitter! We'll be doing a Victorian era anthropomorphic style as the white mice lend themselves more to that than a "natural" setting, but get creative, you can make almost any scene you can think of with the aid of a few dollhouse scale props.


All mice are "upcycled" from near expired frozen feeder mice. And we use no harmful chemicals, just Borax. 
Taxidermy of this nature was a popular Victorian era hobby and in 6-8 hours you can go from never having done taxidermy to having your own completed piece to take home. Class time will include a lunch break, and students can leave as they finish.


All the taxidermy materials you need (including your mouse) and a minimalist base will be provided. All taxidermy materials are provided but students are encouraged to select their own dollhouse scale props and a base beforehand so they can create their own unique scene. Thinking about the scene or character you wish to create will help you work with a goal in mind when sculpting your mannequin on the day. So please think ahead!  Nicer bases and all props are BYO. There will be a few props and nicer bases for sale separately on the day for procrastinators, but then you are limited to the selection I bring.

Dollhouse miniatures are not cheap but you don't need many. 
If you want to choose props and bases in person, you'll find everything you need at a Michael's craft store (for bases) and Tiny Dollhouse on the UES (beware their limited open hours.) Otherwise Etsy, eBay, or just a google search for "dollhouse miniature" should do the trick.

Brant MacDuff is a taxidermist and wildlife educator. He travels the country giving lectures on the history of taxidermy and conservation as well as teaching classes and giving tours of natural history museum dioramas.

Who should take this class?
This all-day workshop is tailored for the electronic enthusiast who has just started off using KiCad or wants to switch to it from other tools. Anool will quickly walk through a design from Schematic to Gerbers and answer your “how-to” questions.
What should I bring? 
Please bring a laptop, with KiCAD ver5 and FreeCAD ver 0.17 installed.
Who is teaching?

ANOOL J M (MUMBAI, INDIA)
As a master of hardware design, Anool is the driving force behind WyoLum projects.  In his day job, he is an Electrical Engineer, working in the field of Test & Measurement at Lumetronics in Mumbai. His interests range from Hacking, Origami, Astronomy, Photography and Cycling. He is one of the founding duo of WyoLum Emergents – a global group of Open Hardware enthusiasts. Between all of his hobbies and cycling, he manages to design and build original Open Source hardware projects. He is also the co-founder of Makers’ Asylum – one of India’s first community driven Maker Spaces. Anool is a contributing writer for the technology blog HACKADAY and finds time to write blog posts on hardware hacking. He lives in Mumbai with his wife – Samata and son – Hearsh.

This is not your typical craft class.
April's Topic:  Yarn Dyeing!
This month we'll be exploring the wooly world of yarn dyeing using acid dyes. We'll be experimenting with hand-painting and speckling techniques and mixing our own fabulous colors. Participants will each receive several mini-skeins of yarn to practice dyeing with. 
Are you a beginner?  We'll provide materials including yarn, dye, and all the other necessary things to make gorgeous colors of your imagination!
Are you a master?  Show off your skills and inspire others!  Bring a project, use our materials and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.
