Führung durch das Labor (2)

Wir werden interessierte Studierende des [http://ei.rub.de/studium/etit ETIT-] und [http://ei.rub.de/studium/its/ ITS-]Studiengangs der Ruhr-Universität Bochum durch das Labor führen um uns und unsere Projekte vorzustellen und zum Mitmachen anzuregen.

Wir werden uns dazu zur angegebenen Uhrzeit am Hörsaal des ID-Gebäudes treffen (HID) und von dort aus mit allen Interessierten mit der U35 zum Labor fahren. Die Veranstaltung wird nicht nur eine Führung, sondern auch Zeit für Kurzvorträge und persönlichen Austausch mit Laboranten lassen. Das zeitliche Ende ist somit offen.

Natürlich sind bei der Führung nicht nur Studierende willkommen, sondern auch jeder andere der sich für unser Wirken interessiert. Fragen können an die "Akteur Mail" oder an unsere Mailingliste "discuss@das-labor.org" geschickt werden.

Help Heat Seek assemble devices to track the heat in apartments and keep landlords honest!
We need your help to solder and assemble 25 of HeatSeek's latest temperature-logging devices. This is a simple through-hole soldering project and a good place for beginners to start, but we'd LOVE help from experienced folks who can guide others or zip through a few devices even faster!
Heat Seek's mission is make the city a safer, warmer place to live for all New Yorkers. Heat Seek helps tenants resolve their home heating issues by providing the objective, reliable temperature data they need to hold their landlords accountable. Working closely with tenant organizers, public interest attorneys, and city officials, HeatSeek installs proprietary temperature sensors and offers technical expertise to assist low-income tenants in documenting when their landlords fail to provide adequate heat during the wintertime. By focusing on tenants at risk being forced from rent-stabilized and other affordable housing, we ensure that sensors are placed with the tenants who need our data the most.

Laser Cutting: Cut and Etch Your Own Designs with Our Laser Cutter

Harness the power of an Eplilog 60 Watt Laser! In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this three hour class, we'll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the "go" button on the laser. We'll cover safety, basic file preparation, and learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you'll have made a plaque for your door, a keychain, a simple box or something slightly ambitious. (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

After learning the basics, each student will create a simple design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 32" x 20" so buy materials accordingly. Keep in mind that large-scale, complex, multi-cut projects may not be appropriate for the class. Our goal is to teach you how to use the tool, not how to reinvent the Sistine Chapel in one afternoon.

Please bring a laptop and a USB jump drive. You may choose to upload and install Inkscape or a free trial of Adobe Illustrator before you come to class to get familiar with the software and start on a vector design project.
This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Monday or Thursday Craft Nights. (See our website for more info.)

This is a one-day introduction to the p5js web programming framework for JavaScript. It is suitable for students with little or no programming experience. p5js is an excellent gateway to get up and running with programming fundamentals. In the class we will breifly cover some necessary basics of HTML and Javascript, but will primarily focus on the p5js environment for fun animations and interactivity. By the end of this class you will create your own interactive web page, and will have the tools to continue exploring and learning p5js on your own.
MaterialsYou must bring your own laptop with a working wireless card. Bonus points if you come with Sublime Text already installed.

Want to get started with physical computing?
Learn to program an Arduino and interact with the physical world! In this class, we’ll cover an introduction to Arduino and learn how to manipulate outputs based on sensor inputs.

What is Arduino?


Software setup (IDE, how to program it, the Serial monitor)


Reading schematics and wiring diagrams


Basics of breadboarding


Controlling output (blinking/fading an LED)


Reading sensor input (with a pushbutton, potentiometer and light sensor)


Combining input and output



Materials
All students will receive a basic electronics starter kit, which contains a starter pack of electronics components and sensors, including a breadboard, wires, light sensor, tilt sensor, LEDs, a motor, and more. Students will also receive an Arduino UNO.
Students should bring their own laptop and install some free software ahead of time:

Who should take this class?
Basic computer knowledge is assumed, and we'll refresh a few concepts from high school physics and math. No previous experience with coding or circuits is required.

This is not your typical craft class. Make-Along is a self-guided craft workshop where participants learn new skills, explore new materials, and make great things!
Decembers's Topic: Stamp Carving & Holiday Cards
Try one of the easiest and most fun forms of printmaking, and make your own holiday cards! Carve rubber erasers to make handmade rubber stamps. Trade ideas and stamps with other attendees and stamp out all your holiday greeting obligations. No experience needed! Class includes all supplies needed to make some stamps you can take home, and up to 20 greeting cards.
Are you a beginner? We’ll provide materials including rubber to carve, carving materials, stamp pads, and blank cards.
Are you a master?  Show off your skills and inspire others!  Bring a project, use our materials, and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.

Pseudonymous Identities with TAILS

In this talk we’ll cover an introduction to using TAILS, an operating system that will let you keep a secret online identity in a USB drive. Aside from its worst-case-scenario-protection security design, TAILS routes all internet traffic through TOR, a global anonymity network, which allows anyone to use the internet without correlating what you do on the internet to your daytime identity. We'll be setting up TAILS USB drives, encrypted/persistent storage, and running through the steps needed to set up a subpoena-ready "rogue" Twitter account as well as some of the general operational security practices around that.
USB drives will be provided but you'll need to bring a Mac or PC (no Chromebooks) to run TAILS.
