DIY Musical Instruments with Teensy

Turn almost anything into a musical instrument with Teensy, an inexpensive Arduino-compatible microcontroller. The Teensy 3.2 has a bunch of touch sensors and analog and digital inputs, and it can plug into almost any music software through USB MIDI. In this class, we'll stick touch pads on any objects to make them into keyboards, drum controllers, or trigger pads. No coding or soldering experience is needed, but you'll have the opportunity to do either or both if you like. Bring an object you'd like to instrumentify!

Not required, but recommended: bring a laptop with your favorite music software such as GarageBand, Ableton Live, FL Studio, or Max/MSP.  

If you are interested in doing some coding, bring a laptop with the Arduino software <https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software> and Teensyduino software <https://www.pjrc.com/teensy/td_download.html> both installed.

This is not your typical craft class.  Make-Along is a self-guided craft workshop where participants learn new skills, explore new materials and make great things! 
Summer 2016 Make-Along Camp Picnic Party! 
Friendship bracelets! Lanyard Keychains! Dream Catchers! Bad 90's fashion decisions! If you fondly remember your summer camp days come and relive them with us for an afternoon in Prospect Park. We'll be reminding you how to make all the best of summer crafts, while playing camp games, and having a picnic pot-luck with the NYC Resistor crew. 
Are you a beginner?  We'll provide materials and camp dorks who remember how to make EVERYTHING and sometimes wonder just what percentage of their brains are filled with this information. We'll also have all the equiptment we need to play things like capture the flag, freeze tag, dodgeball, ultimate frisbie, and any other game you can remember even half the rules.  
Are you a master?  Show off your camp skills and inspire others!  Bring a project, use our materials and hang out in a great space while doing what you love.
NOTE: exact location in park will be sent to ticket holders. ALSO NOTE: pot-luck is optional because some of us are better at friendship bracelets than making anything edible.

Radical Ethnography is a 3 hour workshop covering the communication design of various social media platforms and a study into how fandoms, social media campaigns, and harassment campaigns use the specific design and infrastructure of the sites themselves to craft these campaigns.


This is part ethnography, part observation, and all exploration.
Workshop breakdown: 30-45 min lecture
(15 min break)
1-1.30 hours of workshopping and exploring
(5 min break)
30 minutes to present
Does the design of a social media platform determine how language is amplified and how language is used and evolved? Does the infrastructure of a site shape the identity of the site itself and users within the site?

Soldering is one of the most important skills for dabbling with electronics! Come join us for an introductory soldering workshop. Soldering enables you to create sturdy connections between electronics components.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use a soldering iron safely and effectively, and get plenty of practice. We'll be soldering up some Game of Life kits - LED tiles that generate nifty animations.

No previous experience is required, making this introductory workshop a great choice for anyone who's curious about getting started with hardware tinkering!

This class will be taught by Resistor members Bonnie Eisenman and Caroline Sinders.
