In this class you'll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser. This class will be focused on making Holiday Ornaments, and will include our overall explanation of laser use that gives you a discounted rate on future lasering. We will have a number of holiday themed design cuts available.

In this three hour class, we'll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the "go" button on the laser. We'll cover safety and basic design skills in Inkscape and you'll learn how to do a burninate test to find out if a material is laserable. After the three hours, you'll have made a least one ornament for the holidays (if there's time maybe five or more). (There is lab time for laser cutting, questions and answers, and working with Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

After learning the basics, each student will create their own design and cut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers your time on the laser cutter to cut and etch. We have a variety of scrap material to experiment with or you can purchase laserable acrylic, Delrin, illustration board, leather, or wood. Midwest [midwestproducts.com] and Revell make a variety of plywood, bass and balsa that is perfect for laser cutting. The bed size of our laser is 12" x 24" so buy materials accordingly.

We use Inkscape because it saves .svg files natively and is open source. Inkscape is available at inkscape.org

This class is required for coming in to do work on the laser independently. If you get inspired, you can come back and laser your objects on our Lunar Laser Mondays or Thursday Craft Night [see calendar for times].

Also, some folks have been at Meeting C++ conference in Berlin and will give us a short wrap up of things happened there, uh, and maybe updates about the latest state of Scott Meyer’s hairdo.

Our Forth Annual Festivus - Festivus VI
On the night of the 20th December 2014 members and their guests are invited to the historic and traditional Festivus Party at Nottingham Hackspace.
Activities will be kicked off at 18:30 with a screening of Seinfeld "Festivus for the rest of us" at 19:00 followed by:
FESTIVUS DINNER
EAT: We will have a "pot-luck" Festivus Dinner... the more YOU bring the more there will be to eat. We invite you to wow us with your interesting and delicious festive dishes so please bring some food to share!
DRINK: There will be a barrel of real ale from the Magpie Brewery (for which we usually have a pledge drive) and Kate's amazing Festivus Punch! You are also of course invited to bring a bottle of something along to share there will be plenty of non-intoxicating fayre on offer too!
AND BE JERRY: We may have live music from the Hackspace Time Band or Ukulele Orchestra (please do join in) or perhaps from Kate or Doc Littles collection of tunes as well as the traditional Festivus activities which include:
THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES in which will be detailed how you have all disappointed the host over the year.
THE FEATS OF STRENGTH will be the tradition bout of NINJA though of course it'll only be over once the host has challenged one of the guests to wrestle.
We encourage you to come along to this party which is a tradition of ours in the Festive season. The Hackspace will be properly decorated with a bare aluminium pole (and nothing more). We'll have the arcade machines up and running as well as several games to play. Tools will strictly be off limits to revelers of course. Do bring friends and family along too.

In this presentation we demonstrate the installation of persistent firmware modifications into the EFI boot ROM of Apple's popular MacBooks. The bootkit can be easily installed by an evil-maid via the externally accessible Thunderbolt ports and can survive reinstallation of OSX as well as hard drive replacements. Once installed, it can prevent software attempts to remove it and could spread virally across air-gaps by infecting additional Thunderbolt devices.
